Overcoming struggles, Hopkins looks great
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/17/13) The Houston Chronicle says rookie receiver DeAndre Hopkins has overcome some early struggles to look great during the team's recent offseason practices. The Texans have desperately been searching for a solid No. 2 receiver to play opposite Andre Johnson. Hopkins could be on his way to filling that void. "I've been impressed. He struggled early -- which we knew he would -- but I think it helps when you throw a guy in with the ones right away because he gets coached by (Matt) Schaub," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. "But the last three days he's impressed me because he hasn't had Matt and he hasn't had Andre (Johnson) out here and he’s been on top of what he’s doing. He’s obviously very gifted. We've just got to make sure we've got him doing what he does best."
Hopkins not a starter yet
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/28/13) Texans receivers coach Larry Kirksey told the Houston Chronicle that rookie DeAndre Hopkins has some learning to do and is not quite at the top of the depth chart. Second-year receiver Keshawn Martin and third-year receiver Lestar Jean are seemingly ahead of Hopkins -- for now. "[Martin and Jean] have come a long way from last year, and now DeAndre's got to go through the same learning process," Kirksey said. "He’s a talented young man, and we have very high expectations for him. But these second-year guys are ahead of him right now. They’re competing; they’re not just going to let him have the job."
Hopkins works with starters
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/22/13) The Texans official team website reports that rookie receiver DeAndre Hopkins is making a good impression early on this offseason. “He’s such a dynamic player,” quarterback Matt Schaub said. “He’s just going to bring an added dimension to our offense.” Schaub cited Hopkins’ “great” attitude and work ethic, and is looking forward to what Hopkins will bring to the squad. Hopkins has practiced with the first-team offense, which meant he and Andre Johnson were the starting receivers. Johnson believes Hopkins is well on his way to contributing. “He’s picking up everything pretty well,” Johnson said. “He went and made some plays today and that’s a good thing. I think day-by-day, he’ll continue to get better and better.”
More praise for Hopkins
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/13/13) The Texans' rookie minicamp was good to DeAndre Hopkins, who wowed with highlight-reel one-handed catches in each of the three days. “He’s special,” coach Gary Kubiak told the official team website on Sunday. “Ball skills are extremely special. Very long, long arms. Big hands; you saw the catch he made out here. He’s going to help us early, and we know that, and that’s why we brought him here.”
High expectations for Hopkins
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/2/13) The Texans expect rookie receiver DeAndre Hopkins to step into a big role immediately. After taking the Clemson receiver with the first-round pick, Texans head coach Gary Kubiak didn't shy away from what he believes will be an impacting first season for the rookie. "I'm expecting it right off the get-go," said Kubiak when asked how quickly Hopkins would contribute in a big role. "He’s going in there, he’s gonna get the reps. It’s gonna be a very competitive situation, but we took him there because we expect him to play very, very early and touch (the ball). This guy’s on his way to being a pro already, and we've got to help him get there real fast."
