Carlos Hyde already 'flashing' in camp
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/27/14) 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said rookie running back Carlos Hyde already is "flashing" his skills in training camp, reports the San Jose Mercury News. With Kendall Hunter out for the year with a torn ACL, Hyde has a golden opportunity to seize the No. 2 job behind Frank Gore.

However, Hyde has plenty of competition. LaMichael James worked as the No. 2 tailback Saturday, and former practice squad member Jewel Hampton also is off to a great start in camp. Second-year pro Marcus Lattimore will join the battle as soon as he's activated from the non-football injury list.

Carlos Hyde showing 'great hands' as receiver
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/16/14) Aside from his potential as a power rusher, 49ers rookie running back Carlos Hyde's hands "looked great during offseason workouts," reports the San Jose Mercury News. The paper said it's a skill the team needs, and one that could earn Hyde more playing time in a crowded backfield.
OC: Carlos Hyde can do everything we ask
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/18/14) 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman said Tuesday he's been impressed with rookie running back Carlos Hyde

"Football just makes sense to him if you can just tell him what to do and you don't have to tell him too much," Roman said. "That's a beaufiful thing in a running back because they have a lot of adjustments to make in protections, etcetera."

Roman scoffed at the notion that the Niners drafted him because of his experience and success in working out of the pistol formation.

"I think Carlos can do pretty much everything that we do. I don't think (his experience in the pistol) had any impact on the evaluation, but it's a great frame of reference," he said.

And finally, when asked if Hyde's ability to quickly grasp concepts was similar to that of Frank Gore's, Roman said he wouldn't openly compare the two but noted that Gore did pick things up quickly and said he'd leave further comparisons to the media.

49ers sign Carlos Hyde
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(5/18/14) The 49ers signed running back Carlos Hyde, their second-round draft pick, to a four-year deal. Hyde ran for 2,491 yards and 31 touchdowns the past two seasons at Ohio State.
Niners add to running back depth with Carlos Hyde
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/9/14) With the 57th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the 49ers selected Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde .

At 240 pounds and 6-feet tall, Hyde is the proverbial bruising running back with an ability to shake off tackles and take the physical toll a running back usually gets in the NFL, albeit with 4.6 speed. Over his last two seasons as a starter for the Buckeyes Hyde totaled 393 carries for 2,491 yards and 31 rushing touchdowns. His receiving skills weren't fully utilized as he had 24 catches for 198 yards and four scores in those two seasons, but he can definitely catch.

It seems as if Hyde will work out best as a volume back at the next level, but his playing time could come slowly in San Francisco given the depth and talent the team has there, starting with veteran Frank Gore.
