Josh Brent sentenced to 180 days in jail, probation
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(1/24/14) Former Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent was given a 10-year suspended sentence along with probation and 180 days in jail Friday. On Wednesday a jury found Brent, who was driving a car when friend and former teammate Jerry Brown was killed over a year ago, guilty of intoxication manslaughter.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison but was given a suspended sentence, which means 10 years of probation. As a result of Texas law, Brent has to spend 180 days in jail because of the probation.

Brown's family and friends were apparently "relieved" with the sentence, because it means relatively little jail time for the former NFL player. It's unclear if Brent will ever attempt to rejoin the NFL; he'll likely face a suspension from the league if he ever does. It's possible that his time spent in jail will cover any suspension he might face.

Brent would likely have to apply for reinstatement to the NFL after retiring in July. Brent could've recieved up to 20 years in prison for his conviction.

Josh Brent found guilty of intoxication manslaughter

Josh Brent retires from NFL
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7/18/13) Cowboys defensive lineman Josh Brent has decided to retire, so he can focus on his off-field priorities, he announced through the team Thursday.

Brent has been charged with intoxication manslaughter after a car crash that killed his teammate Jerry Brown in December. Though Brown's mother publicly has forgiven Brent and said she didn't want him prosecuted, the former defensive tackle still has plenty of legal problems.

"This is the right decision for me and something that I have given a lot of thought to," Brent said in a statement. "I am at a point where my main focus is about getting priorities in my life in order. Those priorities are more important than football. Doing the right things in life are more important than football. I love the game very much. I love my teammates, but this is the right thing for me to do."

Brent is also due in court Friday. His trial for the manslaughter charge is scheduled to begin Sept. 23.
