|Darqueze Dennard exits game with hip injury |
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
(8/16/14) Bengals rookie cornerback Darqueze Dennard was forced out of Saturday's preseason game against the Jets with a hip injury.
The No. 24 overall pick in this year's draft suffered the injury in the first half. He was ruled out for the remainder of the game and will likely be further evaluated moving forward. The team has not revealed the extent of the injury.
|Marvin Lewis: Darqueze Dennard is 'best rookie corner I've seen' |
|by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com|
(8/7/14) Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, often stingy in his praise, called No. 24 overall pick Darqueze Dennard "the best rookie corner I've seen." The Michigan State product won the Thorpe Award as college football's best defensive back in 2013.
"I was told that one of his inadequacies was possibly playing the ball down the field," Lewis said. "And sometimes I think college corners get knocked for that, particularly if they were a physical player in college. But one of the things that's impressed me so much is his ability to track and play the football on vertical throws.
"If you want to be a great corner at this level, you have to have those capabilities, and he's shown those thus far."
|Bengals sign rookie Darqueze Dennard |
|by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer|
(6/12/14) The Bengals on Thursday signed cornerback Darqueze Dennard of Michigan State, their first-round selection at No. 24 overall in the NFL Draft.
"He's been everything we hoped he would be to this point," coach Marvin Lewis said. "He's a great talent. He played in a big-time pressure defense at Michigan State, and he's not afraid to be out there (in coverage) by himself. And as we knew he would, he conducts himself every day as a mature pro who wants to get better every day."
Dennard was the winner of the Thorpe Award in 2013, which is given annually to college football's top defensive back.
Asked whether Dennard is considered a possible first-year starter, defensive backs coach Vance Joseph said: "Starting a rookie at corner, it depends on the person. Darqueze is a very mature person. He's an achiever also. From high school to college, he's been a winner. His personality, his skill set, I would feel fine starting him. But he's got to earn it."
|Darqueze Dennard might not play so soon |
|by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer|
(5/9/14) Fantasy owners might have to wait, potentially a long time, to see large stat contributions from Darqueze Dennard . The fit is pretty good with the Bengals, who have long assembled a cornerback army to help against opposing offenses. But Dennard's rise to the starting lineup is blocked with veterans like Leon Hall, Terence Newman, Adam Jones and Dre Kirkpatrick. The coaches even compared Dennard's game to Hall's, who has been the best Bengals corner for a while.
In time, those guys will clear out and Dennard will play a bunch, but until then his stats won't be great. We'd pass on Dennard in seasonal leagues and would spend only a late-round pick on him in dynasty/keeper formats. He's only worth a late-round pick in rookie-only drafts, too.
