Niners top pick Jimmie Ward ready for camp
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7/18/14) The 49ers drafted Northern Illinois defensive back Jimmie Ward even though he had a significant foot injury. He didn't take part in any of the team's offseason workouts because of it. But when the team released their injury lists on Thursday, Ward wasn't on them, suggesting that he's ready to practice. The Sacramento Bee expects Ward to compete for playing time as a nickelback and perhaps as a safety.
Jimmie Ward expected to be cleared as rookies report
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/16/14) 49ers first-round pick Jimmie Ward, a defensive back out of Northern Illinois, was among the team's rookies reporting to training camp Wednesday. He should be cleared to practice for the first time since undergoing March foot surgery, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Ward is projected as the starting nickel back.

Jimmie Ward out until training camp
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(5/25/14) 49ers first-round pick Jimmie Ward, who had surgery to fix a fracture in his right foot, should be healthy for training camp, coach Jim Harbaugh told CSNBayArea.com. "Right now, (he is) just in the walk-through type of sessions,' Harbaugh said.

Ward played safety in college but could start at nickel cornerback for the 49ers.

49ers sign a pair of rookies
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/22/14) The 49ers announced Thursday they have signed rookie defensive back Jimmie Ward and rookie linebacker Chris Borland to four-year deals.

Ward was selected by the 49ers in the first round (30th overall) of this year’s draft from the University of Northern Illinois. Borland was the second of three, third-round selections out of the University of Wisconsin.

Jimmie Ward will play safety, nickel for 49ers
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/9/14) 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh wasn't shy about talking about his plans for rookie defensive back Jimmie Ward , highlighting Ward's versatility a number of times during his post-Round 1 interview with the media.

As expected, Ward will compete for not only snaps at safety but as a nickel corner. There's a chance he could play a decent amount as a rookie, but with Eric Reid and Antoine Bethea expected to land the starting the safety spots, Ward might have to wait for full-game reps.

On the plus side, we love Ward's game. He's a smart, strong, intense tackler who should be a candidate for a lot ot tackles. While we'd take him with a third-round pick in rookie-only drafts and with a late pick in dynasty/keeper leagues, we'd probably pass on him in 2014 seasonal leagues.
