|Johnny Manziel makes NFL debut |
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
(9/14/14) Browns ballyhooed rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel made his NFL debut Sunday against New Orleans, but his lone pass was dropped. He also handed the ball off twice before giving way to starter Brian Hoyer.

(9/10/14) Browns coach Mike Pettine said Wednesday the team might implement a package of plays for backup quarterback Johnny Manziel during Sunday's game against the Saints. Pettine added he is sure New Orleans defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is preparing for it.
"The Ryans are paranoid and very detailed in their preparation," Pettine said with a smile, per The Plain Dealer.
|Coach: Use of Johnny Manziel in game would be a 'feel thing' |
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
(9/6/14) Mike Tomlin and Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau have claimed they are expecting the Browns to use rookie backup quarterback Johnny Manziel in some capacity Sunday in Pittsburgh, but Mike Pettine is not showing his hand.
"It's pure gameplan stuff, change of pace," Pettine told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "That would be a feel thing. I don't think there would be a strict set of parameters for when to do it."
Pettine has stressed, however, that Brian Hoyer remains the starter and that he did not want him looking over his shoulder in fear that Manziel will replace him.

(9/3/14) Browns coach Mike Pettine said quarterback Brian Hoyer "knows it's not going to be a quick hook," but also knows "this is a production business," reports the Akron Beacon Journal. Hoyer won the starting job over rookie Johnny Manziel. He faces a tough Week 1 matchup at Pittsburgh.
|Steelers expect to see Johnny Manziel in Week 1 |
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
(9/2/14) Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that he expects Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel to play in Sunday's game between the two teams in some capacity, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
"We've got a great deal of respect for Johnny Manziel and his talents," Tomlin said. "They didn't draft him in the first round to watch. We fully expect them to utilize him in some capacity in this football game.''
The Browns named Brian Hoyer the starter during the preseason, but the team has also discussed whether they should use a package of plays for the rookie quarterback.
"We're proceeding to prepare for both of those guys,'' Tomlin said. "We're anticipating them utilizing both, in some capacity. That's the appropriate approach for us to take. I think all of the things they ask (Manziel) to do, Brian Hoyer is fully capable of doing it, and I'm sure they're going to do it with him as well. I just think when you've got a talent like Johnny Manziel, you're going to get him on the field and help him grow and develop even as you get into the regular season. I don't think necessarily his presence in the game is going to dictate a difference in schematics."
|The excitement of Johnny Manziel as the Browns new franchise quarterback was tempered a day later when star receiver Josh Gordon was rumored to be facing a season-long suspension. If that turns out to be the case, Manziel's rookie season doesn't figure to be loaded with major stats. That might not have been the case even with Gordon considering Manziel was and is headed for a battle to start this season under center with Brian Hoyer. Standing at 5-foot-10, the dynamic collegiate playmaker totaled 7,438 yards on 565 of 825 passing (68.4 comp. pct.) with 59 passing touchdowns and 22 interceptions. He also ran for 2,096 yards and 29 touchdowns on 334 carries. He has plenty of potential and will make some exciting plays but he also could get destroyed by the hits he'll take and, at least for this year, doesn't have a good receiving corps. He's worth drafting late in deeper leagues and two-quarterback leagues since he'll probably play the most of any Browns quarterback and should have some solid weeks. He's also worth taking with a pick in the middle of dynasty/keeper league drafts and a first-round pick in rookie-only leagues. But don't get too caught up with him if you're in a standard seasonal league because he'll presumably play this year without Gordon and could show a lot of growing pains. Teddy Bridgewater is the better rookie quarterback for the 2014 Fantasy season.
