Report: Browns QB Johnny Manziel set for OTA participation
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(5/21/15) Browns embattled quarterback Johnny Manziel is expected to participate fully in the team's OTA session Tuesday, per ESPN.
Manziel has had a far different offseason in 2015 than he did before his rookie year, which was marked by photos of him partying at various clubs. He checked into a rehab facility and has moved from downtown Cleveland to a quiet suburb. He has also earned praise from teammates who have claimed he seems far more dedicated to his craft.
The second-year quarterback appears set for now to compete for a backup role behind Josh McCown. His chief rival for that job is Connor Shaw, who outperformed her last year.
Browns OC: Manziel getting in position to be an NFL quarterback
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(5/10/15) New Browns offensive coordinator John DeFilippo believes in quarterback Johnny Manziel. In his limited time with the young quarterback, DeFilippo is seeing plenty of growth, according to Cleveland.com.
"Johnny's been great,' DeFilippo said after the second rookie camp practice Saturday. "He's been fantastic. What he wants to talk about, before he stepped foot back in this building is his business. All I know is Johnny the football player, and he's been awesome. He's been working hard, very hard with myself and (quarterbacks coach Kevin O'Connell), and doing what we want him to do on the field."
DeFilippo believes Manziel can make it in the league.
"All I know is this: From the moment he stepped in this building from the last two weeks, he's been nothing but a consummate professional,'' DeFilippo said. "He's spent every hour that he's been allowed to spend in this building. We give them worksheets every Tuesday and every Friday, and they're done to the unbelievable detail that we need an NFL quarterback to do. From that standpoint, like I said I can't predict the future, but all I can do is tell you right now Johnny Manziel is putting himself in a position to be a quarterback in the NFL."
Browns declare Josh McCown starter, Johnny Manziel needs to focus on self
|by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com|
|(5/9/15) Browns head coach Mike Pettine declared Josh McCown the team's number one quarterback.
"We’re not going to start talking competition," Pettine said, per the Chronicle-Telegram. "Josh will more than likely be the starter going into camp, and in the foreseeable future I don’t see that changing."
Last year's first-round draft pick, Johnny Manziel, spent 10 weeks in rehab after a disappointing rookie season. Pettine said he didn't need to worry about competing for the starting job at this point.
"We want him, essentially, with horse blinders on," he said. "Focus on his job, getting up every day, perfecting his craft, whatever it is, homework that the quarterbacks have or come out and working on his footwork, his releases. That he’s much more concerned about himself than really anything else."
Report: Cowboys not interested in trading for Browns Johnny Manziel
|by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com|
|(4/30/15) If the Browns trade for Sam Bradford or select a quarterback near the top of the draft, it would likely mean that the team is ready to cut ties with Johnny Manziel.
However, the Cowboys, who considered drafting Manziel in the first round last year, wouldn't pursue a trade for the troubled quarterback.
ESPN's Ed Werder reported that the Cowboys aren't interested in trading for Manziel. The team will stick with Brandon Weeden as backup quarterback.
Browns' Mike Pettine says Jonny Manziel is 'very much in our plans'
|by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com|
|(4/21/15) Browns coach Mike Pettine disputed a report that the team had moved on from quarterback Johnny Manziel, reports the Northeast Ohio Media Group.
"He's very much in our plans," Pettine said.
Manziel will compete with Josh McCown and Connor Shaw for the starting quarterback role, which Pettine said has not been decided.
"We're looking forward to getting him out there," he said.
