Pettine: Incident would not bench Browns QB Manziel
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(11/26/14) An incident early Saturday morning involving Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel, which prompted general manager Ray Farmer to criticize him for being out so late, will not prevent Mike Pettine from playing him if needed.
"Unless something unforeseen comes up, just given what I know, it would not have an impact on any decision to play him," Pettine told the Northeast Ohio Media Group.
Barring an injury to starter Brian Hoyer, who has guided the team to a 7-4 record and playoff contention despite personal inconsistencies, such a circumstance is unlikely to occur. Pettine said he "never considered" playing Manziel at all in Week 12 in Atlanta. But the coach did address the current situation with Manziel, who allegedly struck a man who claimed to be a big Browns fans and asked for a hug.
Manziel's party is claiming that he was accosted.
"I've had a talk with Johnny, as has (Farmer)," Pettine said. "I mean, he was very upfront and notivied us immediately what had occurred. But as far as in the building, he's been a true professional, he's done everything that's been asked of him - but obviously this is something that's unfortunate."
Manziel's agent denies claim Browns QB 'sucker-punched' man
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(11/25/14) Johnny Manziel's agent denied the account of a man who said the Browns backup QB "sucker-punched" his brother early Saturday morning in Cleveland. |
The man claimed he was assaulted by Manziel's entourage and his brother was struck by Manziel during the incident. Manziel's agent, Erik Burkhardt, says it was Manziel and his roommate who were assaulted.
The incident took place near Manziel's residence at about 2:30 Saturday morning, hours before the Browns were to board their flight to Atlanta for their game against the Falcons, Cleveland.com reported. The alleged victim, Chris Gonos of Sandusky, Ohio, told police he said to Manziel "I'm the biggest Browns fan ever, I love you, I want to give you a hug," before approaching him.
He said he was "struck several times in the face" and was "then pushed and attacked" by people in Manziel's group.
"There was no entourage. Johnny and his roommate were trying to get on the apartment elevator at his home when they were accosted by a very aggressive man and his associates," Burhardt said in a statement. "It was an unfortunate situation and he immediately let (Browns general manager) Ray Farmer and the team know what happened."
Browns issue statement on alleged Johnny Manziel incident
|by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com|
|(11/24/14) Browns general manager Ray Farmer released a statement Monday regarding quarterback Johnny Manziel’s alleged involvement in an alleged incident in Cleveland over the weekend.
“We are aware of the incident and are in the process of gathering additional information in order to gain a complete understanding of what occurred," Farmer said. "Nonetheless, the time of the incident is concerning to us. We continually stress to all our players the importance of sound decision making in an effort to avoid putting themselves in these types of situations. We have addressed this appropriately with the player and will have no further comment at this time."
Manziel's agent, Erik Burkhardt, released a statement detailing the events of the incident:
"Johnny and his roommate had been out to dinner earlier in the evening with Johnny’s mother, who is staying with him this week. There was no entourage. Johnny and his roommate were trying to get on the apartment elevator at his home when they were accosted by a very aggressive man and his associates. It was an unfortunate situation and he immediately let Ray Farmer and the team know what happened."
Waiver wire thin for quarterbacks this week
|by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com|
|(10/21/14) With an eye on Week 8 and beyond, Jamey Eisenberg tabbed his top quarterbacks on the waiver wire Tuesday, headlined by the Dolphins' Ryan Tannehill, who is owned in just 43 percent of CBSSports.com leagues at this point.
Additionally, Jamey eyes a few key stashes who might be worth your time if you are having trouble at the position or just have a roster spot to fill. Specifically, recovering Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (36 percent) and Johnny Manziel (13 percent), the Browns' backup, could be worth a flier.
Among quarterbacks with a lower ceiling who nonetheless have jobs locked down, Kyle Orton of the Bills (12 percent) and Alex Smith of the Chiefs (59 percent) have some value, with matchups against the Jets and Rams, respectively, for Week 8.
Browns' Pettine: Brian Hoyer is still firmly our starting QB
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(10/20/14) If you were hoping it was finally time for the Browns to turn to Johnny Football following Sunday's loss to the Jaguars, then you will be disappointed to hear there is no quarterback change on the horizon.
Browns coach Mike Pettine said Monday he is not making a change at quarterback heading into Week 8 vs. Oakland. Brian Hoyer will remain the starter and Johnny Manziel will stay in a backup role.
"Brian is still firmly our starter," Pettine said.
|The excitement of Johnny Manziel as the Browns new franchise quarterback was tempered a day later when star receiver Josh Gordon was rumored to be facing a season-long suspension. If that turns out to be the case, Manziel's rookie season doesn't figure to be loaded with major stats. That might not have been the case even with Gordon considering Manziel was and is headed for a battle to start this season under center with Brian Hoyer. Standing at 5-foot-10, the dynamic collegiate playmaker totaled 7,438 yards on 565 of 825 passing (68.4 comp. pct.) with 59 passing touchdowns and 22 interceptions. He also ran for 2,096 yards and 29 touchdowns on 334 carries. He has plenty of potential and will make some exciting plays but he also could get destroyed by the hits he'll take and, at least for this year, doesn't have a good receiving corps. He's worth drafting late in deeper leagues and two-quarterback leagues since he'll probably play the most of any Browns quarterback and should have some solid weeks. He's also worth taking with a pick in the middle of dynasty/keeper league drafts and a first-round pick in rookie-only leagues. But don't get too caught up with him if you're in a standard seasonal league because he'll presumably play this year without Gordon and could show a lot of growing pains. Teddy Bridgewater is the better rookie quarterback for the 2014 Fantasy season.
