Saints get offensive contributions Week 7

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(10/19/14) The Saints received several offensive contributions in their Week 7 loss at Detroit. Among them, rookie wideout Brandin Cooks caught two of his three targets for 23 yards. Fullback Austin Johnson made a 13-yard touchdown grab and added a 5-yard rush.

Tight end Josh Hill caught an 8-yard pass, and tight end Benjamin Watson had a 3-yard grab. Wideout Robert Meachem was targeted three times without a catch.

Good news, bad news for Brandin Cooks, Marques Colston

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/16/14) In theory, Saints wide receivers Brandin Cooks and Marques Colston should get more looks with tight end Jimmy Graham expected to miss Week 7 at Detroit with a sprained shoulder. The Saints' best options for replacing Graham are Josh Hill and Benjamin Watson, but neither of them are near the receiver he is. Hey, Drew Brees has to throw the ball somewhere.

The problem with that theory is that the Lions are so good against the pass (best in the NFL, actually, allowing just 197.2 yards per game) that more looks -- or a higher percentage of the looks, rather -- might not do either player much good.

At least in points-per-receptions leagues, Cooks is a worthy start. He's a high-volume guy and got his highest volume yet (nine catches on 11 targets) after Graham departed in Week 5, but you might want to steer clear of Colston, who's inconsistent to begin with.

Jamey Eisenberg and Dave Richard both rank him outside the top 30 for this week, to give you some perspective.

Brandin Cooks helps fill Jimmy Graham void

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/6/14) With star tight end Jimmy Graham sidelined by a sprained shoulder, Saints wide receiver Brandin Cooks became one of quarterback Drew Brees' favorite targets in the second half Week 5 against Tampa Bay, finishing the game with a career-high nine catches for 56 yards. Three of those catches came on the Saints' first drive of the second half, which resulted in a touchdown.

Though running back Pierre Thomas seemed to be the bigger beneficiary of Graham's absence, both he and Cooks became crutches for Brees, who repeatedly dumped the ball off to them underneath with his biggest downfield target out of the game.

Cooks has been a consistent enough part of the passing game, averaging 6.4 catches through five games, for owners in points per reception leagues to start him regardless, but if Graham isn't ready to return following the team's bye in Week 6, Cooks becomes a strong play across the board. Just remember that because of his role, yardage has been hard to come by. He has yet to top the 77 he put up in his NFL debut Week 1 at Atlanta.

Brandin Cooks posts team-high nine receptions in Week 5 win

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(10/5/14) Saints wide receiver Brandin Cooks had a team-high nine catches on 11 targets for 56 yards while adding 15 rushing yards on two carries in his team's 37-31 overtime win over the Buccaneers in Week 5.

Both the receptions and targets represented season highs for the rookie, but Cooks has found it difficult picking up chunks of yards as the Saints offense has mostly failed to look at peak level throughout the year. Cooks has racked up 32 receptions but only 255 yards, and he's reached the end zone just once. The Saints are off in Week 6 before traveling to Detroit to face the Lions.

Bounce-back week for Brandin Cooks?

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/1/14) Saints wide receiver Brandin Cooks continued his up-and-down rookie season with just five catches for 31 yards Week 4 at Dallas, but the good news is he was on the field more than ever, playing 82 percent of the team's snaps. He just got lost in the shuffle in the team's futile attempt to come back from an early deficit.

He has the right matchup for a bounce-back performance Week 5 against Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers are tied for 28th against the pass (with the Saints, incidentally), and have allowed the most Fantasy points to wide receivers this season. They were burned big by the Steelers' Antonio Brown, who had seven catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns last week, and the Falcons' Julio Jones, who had nine catches for 161 yards and two touchdowns the week before.

Of course, Cooks could end up taking a back seat to tight end Jimmy Graham in this one, but it's shaping up to be a big game for quarterback Drew Brees. And a big game for him means multiple touchdown passes.

Jamey Eisenberg and Dave Richard both rank Cooks outside their top 24 wide receivers for this week, but I wouldn't be opposed to using him as a flex option.
