by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com (9/30/14) With the Bills and newly minted starting quarterback Kyle Orton on the schedule, Jamey Eisenberg has the Lions as his top waiver-wire add among DST units for Week 5.
Opposing DST units have enjoyed solid success against the Bills in recent weeks, with the Chargers and Texans both scoring in double figures. A big part of that was the subpar play of quarterback EJ Manuel, who threw a pick-six to the Texans a week ago. Whether Orton, who has started just one game since 2011, will be an improvement is still to be seen, however the Lions' pass rush has been dominant at times this season, and could make life hard on Orton.
The Lions should be worth starting in Week 5, given how well they are playing right now.
Lions hold Jets to two touchdowns in win
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com (9/28/14) The Lions DST unit did a solid job for the second straight week Sunday, in a 24-17 win over the Jets in Week 4.
The Lions allowed two second-half touchdowns to sully an otherwise strong performance, but they did a solid job in limiting the Jets to just 336 yards of total offense. They forced a pair of turnovers and sacked Geno Smith twice to boot.
The Lions have allowed fewer than 20 points in three of four games, and will have a pretty good chance to do so again in Week 5 against the Bills.
Tahir Whitehead takes over at MLB for Lions
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (9/24/14) The Lions have decided to move Tahir Whitehead into the starting lineup at middle linebacker, replacing the injured Stephen Tulloch, who is out for the season due to a knee injury.
"It puts you right in the middle of the defense," Whitehead said, per ESPN. "It allows you to be able to flow sideline to sideline, as you saw with Tully over the years, make a lot of plays playing in the middle. It frees you up to do a lot."
Stephen Tulloch out for season due to knee injury
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (9/22/14) Lions coach Jim Caldwell announced Monday linebacker Stephen Tulloch will be placed on injured reserve after suffering a torn ACL Sunday against the Packers. Tulloch was injured during a post-play celebration.
Lions DST holds Packers in check Week 3
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com (9/21/14) The Lions DST held the Packers in check Week 3.
Detroit got on the board early, scooping up a fumble recovery for a score. The team wouldn't let up during the game, giving up just one touchdown to the power-house Packers. While the Lions didn't force any interceptions, they did pick up two sacks and forced a fumble.
The Lions will hope for more Week 4 against the Jets.

Save for the addition of veteran safety James Ihedigbo and rookie linebacker Kyle Van Noy, the Lions defense returns intact. That's good and bad news -- the front seven of the group is rock-solid, anchored by Ndamukong Suh and pass rusher Ziggy Ansah. But the secondary is a mess -- aside from safety Glover Quin there isn't a fearsome defender back there. The Lions turned over their coaching staff this offseason and hired Teryl Austin as their new defensive coordinator. Austin is a defensive backs guru who should help the group perk up, though there's enough weak-ish veterans on staff to keep us pessimistic. The Lions do have a great couple of games to begin the year against the Giants and Panthers and then the Jets in Week 4. If that sounds good to you then think about taking the Lions DST to start the season. Otherwise keep the door open on them being a useful replacement off waivers.
