Might be time to sit Matt Ryan

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(1:59 pm ET) After he lost his fourth starting offensive lineman for the season in what his third straight game with just one touchdown pass, I suggested Fantasy owners might consider sitting Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan for Week 8 against the Lions in London. Turns out Jamey Eisenberg and Dave Richard are completely on board with that, ranking him only 20th among quarterbacks.

Granted, the Saints' Drew Brees managed to find a way against them last week, but it doesn't change the fact that the Lions have allowed the fewest Fantasy points per game to quarterbacks by far. And most of the ones they've faced still had their offensive lines intact.

Part of Ryan's problem is that he just doesn't have time to throw the ball downfield, and that's not going to improve with his starting center now gone. The Lions, as you might expect from their ranking, have a terrific pass rush. They're tied for third with 21 sacks. They're also one of three teams that have recorded more interceptions than they've allowed touchdown passes.

Even if everything was hunky-dory for Ryan and he was coming off a stretch where he looked like Peyton Manning, he'd be a candidate to sit with such a tough matchup. As things currently stand for him and the Falcons, it's a no-brainer move.

Disturbing trend developing for Matt Ryan

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/19/14) Through the first four weeks of the season, the Falcons' Matt Ryan looked like he was back to being one of the elite quarterbacks in Fantasy after struggling with a depleted receiving corps behind a poor offensive line last year.

But after his third straight game with just one touchdown pass Week 7 at Baltimore, he's looking more like his 2013 self again.

It's understandable given all the injuries to his offensive line. Center Peter Konz, who hurt his knee in Week 7, becomes the fourth starter lost to injury, after Sam Baker, Joe Hawley and Lamar Holmes. Ryan's receiving corps may be intact, but his offensive line is again poor.

Now, he was still plenty usable in Fantasy in 2013, throwing for 4,515 yards and 26 touchdowns, including 1,355 and eight in his final five games. But he wasn't a slam-dunk starter every week, and he isn't now either.

With a tough matchup in London Week 8 against Detroit, he's a candidate to sit in Fantasy.

Falcons QB Matt Ryan's October struggles continue Week 7

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/19/14) Quarterback Matt Ryan threw for just one touchdown Sunday, as the Falcons dropped a fourth straight game during a 29-7 loss Week 7 at Baltimore. Ryan completed 29 of 44 passes for 228 yards, while rushing for 7 yards and losing one fumble.

Ryan was under constant pressure all game and was sacked five times. Ryan had just 54 passing yards by halftime and was taken down for a safety late in the fourth quarter. His lone touchdown pass was a 4-yard completion to Roddy White with 7:12 left in the game.

Ryan hasn't had a multitouchdown game in three October starts. He has three touchdowns and two interceptions in three games this month. The Falcons are back in action in Week 8 against the Lions.

Struggling Matt Ryan heads into tough matchup

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(10/17/14) Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has failed to score multiple touchdowns in the team's past two games, and will try to end that trend against a tough matchup, with the Ravens on the way in Week 7.

The Ravens have held four of six opposing quarterbacks to one touchdown or less this season, though each of the multiple-score games came in the past two weeks. Bucs quarterback Mike Glennon is the only passer to toss multiple touchdowns against the Ravens this season, which he did in Week 6.

Ryan has now failed to reach 20 Fantasy points in each of the last two games and three of six overall. He has a limited history against the Ravens, although he did toss three touchdowns against them in their lone meeting, back in 2010.

At this point, Ryan and the Falcons' passing game is sputtering much more than we expected. Ryan should still be productive, but he makes for a risky play against a defense that is holding quarterbacks to 17.0 Fantasy points per game, the eighth-lowest total in the league. Both Jamey Eisenberg and Dave Richard have Ryan ranked 17th among quarterbacks for Week 7, so consider him a risky start.

For Matt Ryan, it all comes down to pressue

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(10/8/14) Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has struggled with his consistency this season, posting three games with 25-plus Fantasy points and two with 16 or fewer. What should his Fantasy owners expect in Week 6 with the Bears on the schedule?

Ryan's two worst performances of the season have come in Week 2 against the Bengals and Week 5 against the Giants, and those one thing in common. Ryan was pressured on 38.9 percent of his 95 dropbacks in those two games per ProFootballFocus.com, compared to just 31.6 percent in his other three games. It is simple and obvious, but Ryan has struggled considerable more this season when pressured.

Fortunately for Ryan, this is not a Bears defense that has done a great job pressuring the quarterback. Through five games, they have gotten pressure on just 30.9 percent of their opponents' dropbacks, despite ranking 11th in the league with 11 sacks. If the Bears give Ryan time to operate in a clean pocket, he will pick them apart.

The Bears have mostly held up well against opposing quarterbacks, though they have also benefitted from a pretty easy schedule. Cam Newton and Aaron Rodgers have racked up 54 Fantasy points against the Bears over the last two weeks, while Geno Smith and EJ Manuel managed just 33 combined points in two games; Chicago's most impressive performance came in holding Colin Kaepernick to 13 Fantasy points in Week 2.

Ryan gets the added benefit of playing at home, where he has six touchdowns and no interceptions in two starts. Ryan deserves to be in your starting lineup for Week 6 despite a subpar effort last week.
