Bills not ruling out QB in first round
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(4/25/14) Bills general manager Doug Whaley said the team "doesn't plan" on drafting a quarterback with the No. 9 overall pick, but he didn't rule it out as he earlier did, reports ESPN.com. Whaley's statement could be designed to keep other teams guessing, or it could show a lack of faith in last year's first-rounder, quarterback EJ Manuel.
EJ Manuel better prepared for 2014 season
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(4/23/14) Bills quarterback EJ Manuel, who dealt with injuries and inconsistency as a rookie, told the Associated Press he's ready to take a big step forward. "I definitely agree there's a lot out there for myself as a quarterback to get better," he said at the team's voluntary conditioning program. "I had some success. And I had some bad games as well. It's obvious."

Manuel said he's not limited in any way by last year's knee injuries and that he feels better prepared for the 2014 season.

"I'm eager about it. I'm excited," he said. "I know there is a lot of area for me to grow. That's why I took these last four months to allow that growth."

Bills 'all in' with EJ Manuel
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3/24/14) Bills coach Doug Marrone said the team did not consider pursuing Michael Vick and is going "all in" with second-year quarterback EJ Manuel.

"We’re secure with our quarterback position," Marrone told the Toronto Sun. "Obviously we’re all in with EJ, and with Thad (Lewis) and Dennis Dixon and Jeff Tuel. We’re really excited with what we bring to the table at that position. We didn’t venture into that subject.”

The Bills would add a veteran quarterback only if he came in "as a backup and a mentor to EJ, so it would have to be the right fit," Marrone added. "And they would have to come in knowing their slot.”

Health is key to EJ Manuel's development
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/20/14) Bills quarterback EJ Manuel missed six games and a lot of practice time in his rookie year due to knee injuries. Coach Doug Marrone said keeping Manuel healthy is critical to his development.

"He played last year and really didn't practice that much," Marrone said at the NFL combine. "If you think about all the players that played in the league, he probably practiced the least and played.

"For us, the priority, just like all the players, is to make sure that we keep him healthy. It's important for us, important for his development."

Marrone added he's excited about Manuel's potential "because when he was in there, with the lack of time that we had, there were things that he did very well."

Are Bills too committed to EJ Manuel?
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/5/14) Bills coach Doug Marrone told quarterback EJ Manuel he's the starter entering next season, but according to ESPN.com the team should keep its options open this offseason, including the draft and the trade market. The website notes Manuel was inconsistent, completing nearly 70 percent of his throws against Carolina and posting a 31.2 passer rating against Tampa Bay.

Manuel accounted for 13 touchdowns and 12 turnovers in his rookie year.

Manuel missed six games due to ligament sprains in both knees after tearing the meniscus in his left knee during preseason. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee after the season and plans to wear a brace in 2014.
