Panthers exercise 5th-year option on Cam Newton
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(5:15 pm ET) The Panthers made it official, excercising the 2015 option on quarterback Cam Newton, reports CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora. The option is worth about $15 million.

Newton is recovering from ankle surgery but is expected back for training camp.

Cam Newton's recovery going well
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(4/2/14) Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is recovering well following surgery on his left ankle two weeks ago, his agent told the Charlotte Observer. The surgery was designed to tighten Newton's ankle ligaments.

"He's doing fine," agent Bus Cook said. "I mean, Cam's a big, strong, tough kid. So he'll be fine."

Newton will miss OTAs but should be back for training camp, the paper said.
Panthers to pick up Cam Newton's 2015 option
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3/25/14) Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said the team will exercise its fifth-year option on quarterback Cam Newton, keeping him in Carolina at least two more seasons, reports the Charlotte Observer. The 2015 option would pay Newton the average of the top 10 salaries at his position.

Carolina has until May 3 to pick up the option. Newton is recovering from ankle surgery but is expected to be ready for training camp.

Cam Newton's ankle problem dates back to Auburn
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3/24/14) Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who is sidelined four months following last week's ankle surgery, first injured the ankle in 2010 at Auburn, coach Ron Rivera told the Charlotte Observer. In most offseasons Newton's ankle pain would decrease, but this time it didn't, prompting the surgery, Rivera said.

Cam Newton surgery 'went well'
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(3/20/14) Panthers quarterback Cam Newton underwent surgery Wednesday to repair ligament damage in his left ankle, reports ESPN.

The expected recovery is four months, which puts Newton in jeopardy of missing the start of training camp. But, according to the report, he could start throwing on a limited basis before then.

"Dr. (Robert) Anderson did not find anything unexpected in the procedure and the surgery went well," Carolina head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion said in a statement.

Newton will miss much of the offseason workouts and valuable time throwing to a new corps of wide receivers after the team released Steve Smith and watched two others (Brandon LaFell and Ted Ginn) leave via free agency.
