Sweet outweighs sour Sunday for Jaguars QB Blake Bortles

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10/19/14) Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles had a Jekyll-Hyde Sunday against the Browns, but the bottom line was his first career victory.

Bortles completed 17 of 31 passes for 159 yards and a 31-yard touchdown pass to Allen Robinson late in the second quarter that gave his team the lead for good. But he also fired three interceptions to increase his season total to 10. The last of the trio was picked off in the red zone.

The rookie was 0 for 2 in the first quarter before finding the range. But the team stayed mostly on the ground down the stretch - he threw just five passes in the fourth quarter.

Bortles and the Jaguars will try to run with their momentum in Week 8 against Miami.

Blake Bortles still tough to rely on

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(10/16/14) Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles put together his first 20-Fantasy point effort last week, and will try to build on that in Week 7 against the Browns.

Bortles racked up a career-high 336 yards through the air and 38 on the ground last week, and will look to carry that momentum into Sunday's game. However, the Browns have mostly held their own against quarterbacks this season, allowing just one game with more than 20 Fantasy points, to Charlie Whitehurst in Week 5.

Bortles is very much a work-in-progress, as evidenced by his seven interceptions in three and a half games. Though he showed what kind of upside he has last week, he remains too risky to start outside of deeper, two-QB leagues at this point.

Blake Bortles looking to turn things around vs. slumping Titans

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(10/8/14) The Titans had a solid pass defense last season, as they allowed a league-low 15 passing touchdowns, and looked to be continuing that trend through the first three games of the season, when they allowed just two scores through the air. However, things have fallen apart over the last two games, which could open a chance for Blake Bortles to succeed in Week 6 for the Jaguars.

The Titans have been gashed for 64 Fantasy points by opposing quarterbacks over the last two games, and that isn't all because of Andrew Luck. Though Luck put up 37 points against the Titans, Brian Hoyer followed it up with 27 in Week 5, passing for three touchdowns and just one interception. Bortles has had a predictably rough introduction to the starting role, but the Titans seem vulnerable at this point.

Bortles fell apart last week, tossing two interceptions without a score en route to a measly 3 Fantasy points. However, he is talented enough that a breakout game seems likely at some point. Though he is not a dependable option, Bortles might be worth rolling the dice on in two-QB leagues.

Jaguars' Dwayne Gratz still not cleared from concussion

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(10/6/14) Jaguars cornerback Dwayne Gratz has yet to be medically cleared from a concussion, Gus Bradley told the media on Monday, per the team's official website. The team should know more about his status on Tuesday or Wednesday leading up to Week 6 at Tennessee.

Blake Bortles too unreliable at this point

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(10/5/14) Jaguars rookie quarterback Blake Bortles' talent is undeniable, but his introduction to the NFL has not gone smoothly, as he tossed a pair of interceptions for the third straight game to open his career in Week 5 against the Steelers.

Since entering Week 3's game against the Colts in the second half, Bortles' production has fallen off in each successive game. He has gone from 9.29 yards per attempt and two touchdowns in his relief work to just 5.31 yards per attempt and no scores Sunday. He was hurt, yet again, by some drops from the receiving corps, but continues to hurt himself with poor decisions.

Questionable decision making is to be expected from a rookie quarterback, but that doesn't excuse it. The Jaguars have some good young talent around Bortles, but this offense is very much a work-in-progress still, especially with a nonexistent running game. Though Bortles is owned in 36 percent of CBSSports.com leagues right now, it is hard to see him being worthy of starting in Week 5, even against a Titans defense that just allowed three touchdowns to Brian Hoyer.
