Chiefs' Alex Smith will sit out finale with lacerated spleen

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12/26/14) Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith has been diagnosed with a lacerated spleen, an injury that will keep him sidelined for his team's pivotal Week 17 divisional showdown against the Chargers, trainer Rick Burkholde told reporters, per ESPN.

Smith sustained the injury after taking a brutal hit to the abdomen against the Steelers in Week 16. He noticed the discomfort following the game, but did not believe it to be serious.

Smith will not need surgery, although his injury will require a six-week timetable which will virtually keep him out for the remainder of the season, if Kansas City advances to the playoffs. The Chiefs will need to win against the Chargers and have the Ravens and Texans lose in order to clinch a spot in the postseason.

Smith signed a five-year, $76 million contract before the start of the season. In 15 games, Smith passed for 3,265 yards with 18 touchdowns and six interceptions. For the second straight season, Chase Daniel will make a start in Week 17. Daniels completed 21 of 30 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown in a last-minute overtime loss to the Chargers in 2013, which clinched San Diego a playoff spot.

Kansas City opened as a 3-point home favorite. The line moved to 3 1/2 points, as of Friday before Vegas slashed the line due to the news of Smith's injury.

Alex Smith throws for season-high 293 yards in loss

by Larry Hartstein | Senior Analyst
(12/7/14) Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith completed 26 of 39 throws for a season-high 293 yards and a touchdown with one interception in the Week 14 loss at Arizona. Smith rushed four times for 26 yards, his highest total since Week 7.

Smith hit 13 of his first 14 throws and found running back Jamaal Charles for an 18-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Smith was leading Kansas City to a potential tying or winning score late in the fourth quarter when tight end Travis Kelce fumbled following a reception.

Smith plays the Raiders in Week 15.

Chiefs QB Alex Smith tosses two touchdowns

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(11/20/14) Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith tossed two scores Week 12 against the Raiders.

Smith completed 20 of 36 passes for 234 yards and two touchdowns. He did not turn the ball over during the contest. Smith was his usual conservative self, averaging 6.5 yards per attempt. His longest pass of the day was a 30 yard touchdown to Jamaal Charles, but the ball actually traveled two or three yards past the line of scrimmage. Charles took it the rest of the way. Smith attempted to lead his team back with under two minutes to go, but gained just 24 passing yards on the final drive.

He'll take on the Broncos Week 13.

Chiefs QB Alex Smith doesn't do much Week 11

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(11/16/14) Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith was limited Week 11 against the Seahawks.

Smith was effective during the contest, but didn't have a lot of opportunities to throw. He completed 11 of 16 attempts for 108 yards and no scores. Smith did not turn the ball over during the contest. Smith also had two rushing attempts, but lost 1 yard. The Chiefs were content to run Jamaal Charles during the contest, meaning Smith didn't have to do all that much.

He'll look for more Week 12 against the Raiders.

Alex Smith makes it four straight without a turnover

by Larry Hartstein | Senior Analyst
(11/9/14) Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith played his usual low-risk football Week 10 at Buffalo, completing 17 of 29 passes for 177 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. But he scored on an 8-yard run with 8:59 left to lift his team to a 17-13 victory.

Smith ran four times for 25 yards and notched his first rushing score of the year. This was his fourth straight game without a turnover.

Smith plays the Seahawks in Week 11.
