Chiefs, Alex Smith talking extension
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3/18/14) The Chiefs continue to negotiate a contract extension with quarterback Alex Smith, general manager John Dorsey told reporters. Smith has one year and $7.5 million left on his deal.

He threw a career-high 23 touchdowns last season in leading Kansas City to the playoffs.

Chiefs could sign Alex Smith to contract extension
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(2/21/14) Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith is a free agent after this season, but he could be in line for an extension prior to the start of the year, reports the Kansas City Star.

Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said the Chiefs have reached out to Smith’s representatives, and an extension could clear some much-needed salary cap room.

Smith is scheduled to make $7.5 million in 2014.

Alex Smith hints at more pass-happy offense
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/9/14) Quarterback Alex Smith suggested the Chiefs will air it out more in 2014, saying the change actually began in the second half of last season.

“It just kind of happened naturally,’ Smith told the Kansas City Star. “I think the defense was playing great for the first half, and we played some good defenses as well.

“It was our first year in the offense, we didn’t turn the ball over, we were opportunistic in the red zone, but yes we didn’t really have the entire playbook at hand, and that’s to be expected in the first year with a lot of new faces," he added. "So as the year went on and we got more comfortable and coach [Andy] Reid got more comfortable with us and his staff, he started to trust us with more and we showed that we could handle it. By the end, I was feeling really good about things.”

Chiefs eager to reach long-term deal with Alex Smith
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/4/14) Chiefs chairman Alex Hunt reiterated that signing quarterback Alex Smith to a long-term extension is an offseason priority. Smith has one year left on his deal at $7.5 million.

“When we made the trade for him a year ago, that was part of the thinking," Hunt said, per ESPN.com. "I don’t think that thinking has changed. He came in and did a nice job. We’re glad to have him as a part of the Kansas City Chiefs and we hope it’s longer than a two-year stay."

Smith threw for a career-high 3,313 yards and 23 touchdowns while rushing for 431 yards. He helped Kansas City go from 2-14 to a playoff team.

"Alex is somebody who demonstrated he could play at a pretty high level with the 49ers the last several years," Hunt told the website. "Certainly we were hopeful we would see that version of him. One of the things I enjoyed about the season was watching him get better as we went along, which makes sense. Andy [Reid's] offense is pretty complicated, even for someone as bright as Alex. But the longer he played in it, the longer the rest of the team was in this offense, you could see him getting better. I think it’s very exciting for 2014 to see where that offense goes."

Report: Chiefs seeking to extend Alex Smith contract
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(1/8/14) The Chiefs will attempt to extend the contract of quarterback Alex Smith in the offseason before he begins his final year of the deal, a source has told the National Football Post.

Smith helped transform a 2-14 team in 2012 into a playoff participant. He completed 60.6 percent of his passes in the regular season for 3,313 yards, 23 touchdowns and just seven interceptions. He rose to the occasion against Indianapolis in the first round of the playoffs by completing 30 of 46 passes for 378 yards, four scores and no picks.

He is slated to earn $7.5 million in 2014.
