Alex Smith on pay-as-you-go deal: No thanks
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(8/10/14) Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith told USA Today that he's not interested in a contract extension structured like the one the Bengals just gave Andy Dalton. That six-year extension functions more like a two-year contract, as it's essentially pay-as-you-go after Year 2.

"I want to get something that's right that I'm going to play out, absolutely, and that's definitely a focus of mine," he said.

Smith continues to hope the sides can work out an extension before the season. He's scheduled to make $7.5 million this season, the final year of his deal.

Alex Smith does little in first preseason game
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(8/7/14) Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith did not make much of an impact during Thursday's preseason opener against the Bengals.

Smith stayed in the game with the first-team offense for three drives and loss a fumble after getting sacked in the second series of the game. He completed 3 of 5 passes for 19 yards, averaging 3.8 yards per attempt.

The Chiefs will travel to Carolina to face the Panthers on Aug. 17.
Alex Smith will table negotiations at some point
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/30/14) The Chiefs and Alex Smith continue to discuss a contract extension, but the quarterback said Wednesday that at some point he will table those talks, reports the Kansas City Star.

"You’re getting to the point where either way, you want it to stop being a distraction," Smith said. "You guys know how I feel about this, and it’s the truth."

Smith, 30, has one year left on his contract at $7.5 million.

"You’re finally gonna cross a line where it’s like, it’s just football from here on out and I’m done not only talking about it with you guys, but even behind the scenes as well," Smith said. "We talk about eliminating distractions and that’s a part of it. The focus needs to be on ball."

Chiefs still negotiating with Alex Smith
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/29/14) The Chiefs continue to talk with quarterback Alex Smith's reps about a contract extension, although the sides remain far apart, reports the Kansas City Star. Smith is set to make $7.5 million this season, the final year of his deal.

"They’re working through it so we’ll see what happens," coach Andy Reid said. "These things take (time). You know how the game goes. Alex isn’t worried about it and I’m not not worried about it. We just go play."

Report: Chiefs prepared to franchise Alex Smith
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(5/28/14) If the Chiefs are unable to work out a contract extension with quarterback Alex Smith, they're willing to slap the franchise tag on him for 2015, reports NFL Network. Smith will earn $7.5 million this season, the last year of his contract.
