Report: Chiefs prepared to franchise Alex Smith
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(5/28/14) If the Chiefs are unable to work out a contract extension with quarterback Alex Smith, they're willing to slap the franchise tag on him for 2015, reports NFL Network. Smith will earn $7.5 million this season, the last year of his contract.
Chiefs draft Aaron Murray
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/10/14) With pick No. 163 in the NFL Draft, the Chiefs selected quarterback Aaron Murray from Georgia. Murray is expected to challenge Chase Daniel and Tyler Bray to be the No. 2 quarterback behind starter Alex Smith.

Murray will likely sit for at least a year since Smith is entering the final season of his contract, although don't be suprised if Smith still gets a contract extension in Kansas City. Either way, don't expect Murray to start any time soon barring injury.

Murray finished his career at Georgia by passing for 3,075 yards, 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 11 starts in 2013 before suffering a torn ACL in his left knee against Kentucky. He is the only quarterback in SEC history to throw for more than 3,000 yards in all four seasons and is the conference's career record holder in touchdowns (121) and passing yards (13,166).

His status for the start of training camp is questionable with his knee.

Report: Chiefs to consider QB in first round
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(5/5/14) The Chiefs will consider drafting a quarterback with the 23rd overall pick in the NFL Draft, reports NFL Network. Negotiations with Alex Smith on a contract extension aren't progressing well, so the Chiefs are keeping open their longterm options, the report said.
Chiefs, Alex Smith talking extension
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3/18/14) The Chiefs continue to negotiate a contract extension with quarterback Alex Smith, general manager John Dorsey told reporters. Smith has one year and $7.5 million left on his deal.

He threw a career-high 23 touchdowns last season in leading Kansas City to the playoffs.

Chiefs could sign Alex Smith to contract extension
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(2/21/14) Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith is a free agent after this season, but he could be in line for an extension prior to the start of the year, reports the Kansas City Star.

Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said the Chiefs have reached out to Smith’s representatives, and an extension could clear some much-needed salary cap room.

Smith is scheduled to make $7.5 million in 2014.
