Rex Ryan: QB battle won't be a distraction
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3/27/14) Jets coach Rex Ryan told Pro Football Talk that the quarterback competition between Geno Smith and Michael Vick won't be a distraction because "we're not going to let somebody else's agenda get in our way." Ryan presumably referred to the media.

Ryan also reiterated that Smith, who accounted for 18 touchdowns and 25 turnovers as a rookie, will be hard to beat out.

Rex Ryan: Starting QB job is wide open
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3/25/14) Jets coach Rex Ryan said the starting quarterback job will be an open competition between Michael Vick and Geno Smith. "We want that competition," he said. "We'll let it all play out."

Ryan stressed he's seeking competition at every position, not just quarterback. He said Smith will be hard to beat out, but raved about Vick's mobility.

"He's an unusual guy," Ryan said of Vick. "He was unusual when he came out of the league because of how athletic he was but I think he's definitely still … you see all that athleticism he has. He can still run, moves well in the pocket, he's more accurate when throwing from the pocket than he used to be when he came into the league.

"He's got a big arm and can still run so very dangerous. I like the fact that both those guys give us the ability to run zone reads and all those types of things that help your running game. Having a guy, that mobile quarterback, is harder to defend then maybe a guy who's a stationary pocket guy.

"That being said, I'd probably rather defend a mobile quarterback than a Peyton Manning or Tom Brady."

Michael Vick gets one-year deal with Jets
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3/21/14) Minutes after announcing the release of Mark Sanchez on Friday, the Jets officially announced the signing of free agent quarterback Michael Vick. ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that Vick agreed to a one-year, $5 million contract. No further details have been made public.

Vick visited the team earlier in the week and was presumed to be the top choice of the Jets this offseason. He completed 54.6 pct. of his passes with the Eagles last year for 1,215 yards and five touchdowns with three interceptions over six starts.

"He's here in a role where he's going to compete and push Geno Smith to become the very best that he can be," offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said, via the team's Twitter account.

Jets part ways with Mark Sanchez
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3/21/14) The Jets announced that quarterback Mark Sanchez has been released Friday.

Sanchez, the former first round pick, was set to make $9 million with a $2 million signing bonus later this month had he stayed with the Jets. He underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in February and is recovering from shoulder surgery in October. He did not play a down in 2013.
Jets could keep Mark Sanchez in 2014
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(3/7/14) There's a chance the Jets could keep quarterback Mark Sanchez on a revised deal for 2014, reports Pro Football Talk.

Sanchez isn't expected to return with a $9 million base salary and a $2 million roster bonus due later this month. But the report says there's a possibility Sanchez could come back for lesser money.

The report says the final outcome depends on whether the teams potentially interested in Sanchez find other quarterbacks elsewhere in the early days of free agency.
