Ryan Fitzpatrick says he'll be ready for training camp

by Larry Hartstein | Senior Analyst
(3/19/15) Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who's coming back from a broken leg, said he'll be limited in OTAs but fully ready for training camp, reports ESPN.com. Geno Smith and Matt Simms will get more reps in OTAs, the report added.

Fitzpatrick is expected to start for the Jets after posting a 95.3 passer rating in 12 games with the Texans last season.

Report: Ryan Fitzpatrick favored to start for Jets

by Larry Hartstein | Senior Analyst
(3/12/15) New Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is expected to win the starting job, reports Metro New York. The Jets acquired Fitzpatrick from the Texans for a conditional 2016 seventh-round draft pick.

As the roster currently stands, Fitzpatrick, 32, will have to beat out Geno Smith and Matt Simms. In 12 games with Houston last year, Fitzpatrick completed 63.1 percent of his passes for 2,483 yards and 17 touchdowns with eight interceptions.

“He's head and shoulders the best quarterback on this roster and he wasn't brought in to be the backup or be a mentor,” the source said. “He was brought in to compete and earn that starting job and he's expected to do that.”

New Jets regime mum on Geno Smith's future

by Larry Hartstein | Senior Analyst
(1/21/15) New Jets coach Todd Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan had little to say about quarterback Geno Smith's future at a news conference Wednesday, reports Pro Football Talk. Bowles referred to Smith as "a great college quarterback" but didn't assess his performance as a pro or say whether Smith would be his 2015 starter.

Maccagnan, asked about the team's quarterback situation, said he doesn't "want to get too far ahead of ourselves." Smith is under contract through 2016, while Michael Vick is set to hit free agency. Smith accounted for 14 touchdowns and 16 turnovers this season.

The Jets could draft a quarterback at No. 6 overall.

Jets QB Geno Smith skips team meeting on Monday

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12/29/14) Just a day removed from throwing a perfect game and leading his team to a season-finale win over Miami, Jets quarterback Geno Smith skipped a team meeting just hours after the team parted ways with general manager John Idzik and coach Rex Ryan on Monday, reports Jason Cole of Bleacher Report. The reasoning for his absence was not made public.

Smith completed 20 of 25 passes for 358 yards and three touchdowns in a 37-24 victory over Miami, sending Ryan out as a winner. Earlier in the week, he indicated that a coaching change "could be good for us all," and that he sees himself as the starting quarterback for the Jets for a "long time." Smith, the 39th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, finished the season with 13 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions and 2,502 passing yards.

Jets QB Geno Smith: Coaching 'change could be good for us all'

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12/23/14) Jets quarterback Geno Smith sounded like a man who knows the fate of his current head coach on Monday. When asked about dealing with coaching changes while at West Virginia, Smith told reporters that a "change could be good for us all," according to the New York Post.

Smith, the 39th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, has completed only 58.2 percent of his passes, compiling 2,167 yards through the air, with 10 touchdowns and 13 interceptions his sophomore season.

"It is all about what you make it," Smith said. "I think the toughest part about it is not being able to continue to play for the same coach the same guy that you learned to love, you invest so much in, and you believe [in] them. To reset and readjust is a tough thing to do, but we are professionals and we have to do it. A change could be good for us all, so if it happens, when it happens, then we will see."

Team owner Woody Johnson is reportedly interested in hiring former general manager Charley Casserly as a consultant, should the Jets choose to make a change in leadership. After reaching the AFC Championship in his first two seasons, Ryan is in the midst of his worst season as a head coach (3-12) and could be out the door along with general manager John Idzik following Sunday's season finale at Miami.
