Geno Smith gets bulk of first-team reps
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/24/14) As expected, the Jets gave quarterback Geno Smith the bulk of the first-team reps Thursday. Smith got 13 and Michael Vick got four, reports the New York Post.
Geno Smith to get 70-75 percent of first-team snaps at camp
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(6/18/14) Jets quarterback Geno Smith will take 70 to 75 percent of the first-team snaps at training camp next month, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg told the New York Daily News. Smith is clearly ahead of Michael Vick in the quarterback "competition."

As long as Smith doesn't flop, he'll open the season under center.

Geno Smith to take first reps at OTAs
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(4/29/14) Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said quarterback Geno Smith will take the first reps at OTAs, ahead of Michael Vick, reports the New York Daily News. Mornhinweg further said that Smith will get a few more reps than Vick.

"We brought Mike in to compete, to push Geno and to make Geno the very best he can make him," Mornhinweg said.

Rex Ryan: QB battle won't be a distraction
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3/27/14) Jets coach Rex Ryan told Pro Football Talk that the quarterback competition between Geno Smith and Michael Vick won't be a distraction because "we're not going to let somebody else's agenda get in our way." Ryan presumably referred to the media.

Ryan also reiterated that Smith, who accounted for 18 touchdowns and 25 turnovers as a rookie, will be hard to beat out.

Rex Ryan: Starting QB job is wide open
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3/25/14) Jets coach Rex Ryan said the starting quarterback job will be an open competition between Michael Vick and Geno Smith. "We want that competition," he said. "We'll let it all play out."

Ryan stressed he's seeking competition at every position, not just quarterback. He said Smith will be hard to beat out, but raved about Vick's mobility.

"He's an unusual guy," Ryan said of Vick. "He was unusual when he came out of the league because of how athletic he was but I think he's definitely still … you see all that athleticism he has. He can still run, moves well in the pocket, he's more accurate when throwing from the pocket than he used to be when he came into the league.

"He's got a big arm and can still run so very dangerous. I like the fact that both those guys give us the ability to run zone reads and all those types of things that help your running game. Having a guy, that mobile quarterback, is harder to defend then maybe a guy who's a stationary pocket guy.

"That being said, I'd probably rather defend a mobile quarterback than a Peyton Manning or Tom Brady."
