Ben Roethlisberger falls flat in encore

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11/9/14) Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger fell flat on his face in an easy matchup Sunday, a 20-13 loss to the Jets in Week 10.

Roethlisberger entered the game riding the best two-game stretch in NFL history, having passed for six touchdowns in each of his previous two games. However, against a Jets defense that had allowed 24 touchdowns to just one interception to quarterbacks this season, Roethlisberger managed just one touchdown and was picked off twice in the surprising loss.

Roethlisberger still passed for 343 yards and completed 69.8 percent of his passes, so it's not all bad for him. He continues to show a good rapport with deep threat Martavis Bryant, as the duo connected for 143 yards and their sixth touchdown in four games.

Roethlisberger has never been a big touchdown guy, so the last two weeks certainly stand out as outliers. However, he is still completing 68.5 percent of his passes with just three interceptions on 381 attempts overall, the best numbers of his career. Roethlisberger isn't nearly as good as he looked during his historic stretch, but Fantasy owners should feel pretty comfortable relying on him down the stretch, beginning in Week 11 against the Titans.

Steelers QB Roethlisberger racks up big yards in bad day

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11/9/14) Anyone claiming statistics lie can cite those compiled by Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger against the host Jets on Sunday for proof.

Roethlisberger, who exploded for successive six-touchdown games heading into Week 10, would have been held to zero if not for a desperation 80-yard heave off a scramble to wide-open Martavis Bennett with 1:16 remaining. He finished 30 of 43 for 343 yards, two interceptions and a costly defeat to a team entering play at 1-8.

The numbers are not bad considering he dinked and dunked his way to a mere 8 for 10 for 24 yards in the first half. His first pick was his first pick in 147 attempts. His second was an overthrow into 3-on-1 coverage despite loads of time to throw, killing the first possession of the third quarter.

Roethlisberger will get an extra day to think about his Week 10 dud. His team plays at Tennessee next Monday night.

So many thoughts on Ben Roethlisberger

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(11/3/14) What do you say about a quarterback who throws for six touchdowns in back-to-back games?

When that quarterback is Ben Roethlisberger, plenty. Chris Towers and I had a hard time containing our thoughts, actually, so we went to the Fantasy Football Today blog with them.

Chris gave historical context to the performance while admiring each of the 12 touchdowns individually. He also looked ahead to Roethlisberger's Week 10 matchup against the Jets, predicting big numbers for him yet again. I took more of a rest-of-season angle, assessing Roethlisberger's chances of hanging with Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.

If you own Roethlisberger or are considering trading for him, you'll want to give both a read.

Ben Roethlisberger deserves to start

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/29/14) It goes without saying that Ben Roethlisberger's six-touchdown, 522-yard performance Week 8 against Indianapolis was a once-in-a-blue-moon thing, and I stand by my earlier assessment that he's too inconsistent to start in standard 12-team leagues. But that's more for those weeks when every quarterback is available. With six teams on bye, that's certainly not the case in Week 9.

For those owners accustomed to starting Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford, Matt Ryan or Jay Cutler, Roethlisberger may be the best choice. His matchup against Baltimore isn't great. The Ravens rank a suspect 22nd against the pass, giving up 256.0 yards per game, but having allowed just seven touchdowns through the air, they've surrendered the second-fewest Fantasy points per game to quarterbacks. Regardless of the matchup, though, Roethlisberger has a better chance than most of the quarterbacks who might be available of putting up the numbers you're accustomed to.

I'd prefer Carson Palmer, Nick Foles and Cam Newton to him, to name just a few fringy types, but Jamey Eisenberg and Dave Ricahrd both have Roethlisberger in their top 10 for this week.

Big game only makes Big Ben more frustrating

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/27/14) Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had a career performance Week 8 against Indianapolis, setting franchise records with 522 yards passing and six touchdowns. It was just the latest high mark in a career of high marks and a reminder why you should never sell him short in Fantasy.

The problem is he so often tempts you to sell him short with his on-again, off-again play. Actually, blaming it on him isn't entirely fair because he's pretty much always good. But what's good in real life isn't always so good in Fantasy.

Roethlisberger's six touchdown passes in Week 8 give him 16 for the season, which puts him on pace for 32 for the year, good by anyone's standards. But 13 of those touchdowns were divided between four games. Roethlisberger had a combined three in the other four.

If you started him for one those other four, there's a good chance he lost it for you. It's a 50-50 proposition whether he'll greatly help you or hurt you in Fantasy. As more than a bye-week replacement, I need more from a quarterback than that.
