Texans GM Smith: 'We're hopeful we get free agent Ryan Mallett back'

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(2/19/15) Texans general manager Rick Smith said during his combine presser on Thursday that the team must get free agent Ryan Mallett under contract before they begin evaluating the quarterback position.

"We're hopeful we get him back," Smith said.

Smith noted that it's “apparent he picked up several leadership traits that were impressive” playing behind Tom Brady in New England, per the Boston Globe.

Texans acquired Ryan Mallett from the Patriots for a 2015 sixth-round pick back before the start of the 2014 season. Mallett had his season cut short after he suffered a torn pectoral muscle in November. He completed 41 of 75 passes for 400 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in two starts.

Texans QB Ryan Fitzpatrick: 'I'd love to' stay in Houston

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12/29/14) Texans quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick spoke to reporters for the first time since his suffering a season-ending broken leg injury on Monday, per ESPN. He expressed his desire to remain in Houston with the Texans. Fitzpatrick signed a two-year, $7.5 million contract in the offseason and is expected to remain under contract next season.

"I'd love to be here," Fitzpatrick said. "I think aside from all the football stuff, which we've talked about a lot, just the city of Houston, the family's settling in. ... We think it's a great place to live and raise a family."

Texans QB Case Keenum ends season on high note

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12/28/14) Texans quarterback Case Keenum put together an impressive performance to lead his team to a 23-17 victory over the Jaguars in Week 17.

Keenum, who made his second second start of the season, found Arian Foster for a 10-yard score in the opening quarter and an 8-yard touchdown strike to Andre Johnson in the fourth quarter. He compiled 250 passing yards while completing 25 of 35 passes. He added two touchdowns and one interception. He was sacked three times and registered a 98.5 passer rating.

Keenum passed for 435 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions this season.

Texans make it official, put Ryan Fitzpatrick on IR

by Larry Hartstein | Senior Analyst
(12/16/14) The Texans made it official Tuesday, placing quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick on injured reserve with a broken leg. Coach Bill O'Brien has said Thad Lewis or newly-signed Case Keenum will start Sunday against the Ravens.

Texans to decide between Thad Lewis, Case Keenum to start Week 16

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12/15/14) The Texans announced that Tom Savage will miss Week 16 against the Ravens due to a knee injury he suffered on the penultimate play of Sunday's loss against the Colts. The loss of Savage, Ryan Fitzpatrick (broken tibia) and Ryan Mallett (pectoral) means that the starting job will come down to Thad Lewis and newly-signed Case Keenum, coach Bill O'Brien told reporters, per the team's official website.

Lewis was signed to the 53-man active roster on Nov. 26, when Mallett landed on injured reserve with a torn pectoral muscle. He was the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart entering Sunday's game against Indianapolis before Fitzpatrick went down with a season-ending injury. Second-stringer Tom Savage took over for Fitzpatrick but hurt his knee late in the game. As a result, the team signed Case Keenum on Sunday night, who played eight games in 2013 with the Texans and is familiar with the offensive.

"He'd been in our system not long ago," O'Brien said of Keenum, per the Houston Chronicle. "A lot of the things we're doing are what we were doing. He's a bright guy."
