Ryan Mallett flops in second start

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11/23/14) Texans quarterback Ryan Mallett struggled badly in his second start in Week 12, a 22-13 loss to the Bengals.

Mallett, who had two touchdowns in a win a week ago, fell apart in Sunday's game, tossing one interception without finding the end zone. He completed fewer than half of his 45 passes as well, while racking up just 189 yards in the game.

Mallett looked competent in his first career start last week, but couldn't get anything going this week. With bye weeks done, Fantasy owners should have little reason to look his way in Week 13 against the Titans.

Fantasy stardom probably not in Ryan Mallett's future

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11/16/14) Texans quarterback Ryan Mallett looked more than competent in his first NFL start Sunday, a 23-7 win over the Browns in Week 11.

The Texans tried to limit Mallett's exposure, but he still ended up throwing the ball 30 times, as the team logged 84 offensive snaps. He completed 20 of those passes for 211 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while tossing one interception in the game.

Mallett has plenty of weapons, so the Texans would be wise to limit how much he actually has to do in any given game. He showed a solid rapport with both DeAndre Hopkins and Andre Johnson, and found the end zone twice with the team in the red zone. He was solid enough Sunday, but also faced little pressure from a Browns offense that managed to pose little threat.

Mallett showed enough to make you think he might be a starting quarterback in the NFL, but not so much that he looks like an impact Fantasy player. With just two teams left to go on bye, there might not be any reason to rely on Mallett down the stretch, unless he really improves moving forward.

Texans QB Ryan Mallett impressive in starting debut

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11/16/14) Texans new starting quarterback Ryan Mallett certainly took advantage of his first career start Sunday in Cleveland.

Mallett showed a powerful arm and deft touch in completing 20 of 30 for 211 yards and leading his team to a mild upset. Most impressive was the drive he engineered late in the first half that culminated in a 20-yard touchdown pass over the middle to tight end Garrett Graham, giving Houston a lead it never relinquished. Mallett had opened the scoring with a perfectly thrown 2-yarder to J.J. Watt along the sideline.

The fourth-year quarterback did a lot of handing off in the second half as the Texans buried the Browns on the ground. He hit on 10 of 14 for just 76 yards after intermission. Mallett and his team will stay in the AFC North next Sunday when they host Cincinnati.

Texans will evaluate quarterback position during bye

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11/3/14) Texans coach Bill O'Brien has opened the door for a potential change at quarterback following the team's fourth loss in five games Sunday against the Eagles. He said every position, including quarterback, will be evaluated during the team's Week 10 bye, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is at the center of the criticism amid Houston's recent struggles, which could prompt O'Brien to turn to backup quarterback Ryan Mallett.

"I don’t live in a hypothetical world," Fitzpatrick said.

Although, left tackle Duane Brown feels it's not fair for Fitzpatrick to shoulder all of the blame.

"He’s been playing well," Brown said. "We haven’t made it easy for him at all. It’s tough to make throws when you have guys in your face. They brought some good blitzes. Our job is to try to protect him the best as we can.

"Our offense is built around our running game. When we run consistently it elevates his play and gives us our best chance to win. This game of football’s a total team effort. You can pinpoint one player and criticize him too much. I don’t think he deserves as much harsh criticism as he’s getting."

Texans QB Ryan Fitzpatrick so-so in defeat to Eagles

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11/2/14) Texans quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has been consistently mediocre this season, throwing for fewer than 300 yards in every game and managing no more than two touchdowns in any of them.

The same held true in a Sunday loss to Philadelphia. Fitzpatrick completed just 13 of 27, marking the first time this year he has hit on less than 50 percent of his passes. He racked up 203 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

He did have his moments. He found an open Arian Foster down the right sideline with a perfect pass for a 56-yard score late in the second quarter and cut the deficit to 24-21 early in the fourth with a 7-yard strike on a corner route to DeAndre Hopkins. But that was one of just three completions in seven attempts in the final quarter.

Fitzpatrick will have plenty of time to think about the defeat - his team is on a bye.
