|Texans still hoping to build a case for Case Keenum |
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
(12/6/13) The Texans will continue to start Case Keenum at quarterback. Owner Bob McNair made that pronouncement Friday after announcing the firing of coach Gary Kubiak.
McNair said that Keenum, who was replaced by Matt Schaub during the Thursday night loss to Jacksonville, needed to be further evaluated.
"I think the jury is still out, and he's got a lot of ability, and he's shown some flashes of brilliance, and he's shown some rookie mistakes," McNair said. "We've got to see if he can improve or eliminate those mistakes."
Keenum has struggled in the last four games after throwing seven touchdowns and no interceptions in his first three starts.
|Case Keenum benched again Thursday |
|by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com|
(12/6/13) For the second time in four games, the Texans benched starting quarterback Case Keenum Thursday against the Jaguars, in a 27-20 loss in Week 14.
Keenum was benched after the team's third drive of the season half, a drive which saw him throw two incompletions before picking up just four yards on a third-and-10 play. He ultimately led the Texans on just one scoring drive, capped off by an 8-yard touchdown pass to Keshawn Martin.
Keenum ultimately completed 16 of 29 passes for 159 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. He added a scramble for 13 yards, and left the game down 24-10 in the third quarter.
The last time Keenum was benched, he was able to retain the starting quarterback job, so it is not at all clear what the Texans will do next week. The Texans travel to Indianapolis to face the Colts in Week 15.
|Matt Schaub comes out in relief again |
|by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com|
(12/6/13) Texans quarterback Matt Schaub entered Thursday's game against the Jaguars in relief of starter Case Keenum for the second time in two weeks, in a 27-20 loss in Week 14.
Schaub entered the game in the third quarter after Keenum led the team on just one scoring drive. He got the offense moving upon entering the game, leading the way on three scoring drives, but effectively ended Houston's comeback hopes with an interception at the two-minute warning in the fourth quarter.
Schaub's numbers weren't bad in the game, especially considering he played just part of the second half. He completed 17 of 29 passes for 198 yards with a touchdown, but the interception proved especially costly.
The Texans proved willing to stay with Keenum the last time he was benched midgame, so it is not at all clear whether Schaub's strong play for much of his relief appearance will earn him another chance. However, coach Gary Kubiak did tell the Houston Chronicle after the game he would consider starting Schaub for the remainder of the season, but has a "lot of time" before he needs to make that decision.
The Texans are off an extra few days before their next game, in Week 15 against the Colts.
|Case Keenum best left for deeper formats |
|by Nando Di Fino | Senior Fantasy Writer|
(12/3/13) Texans quarterback Case Keenum now has three straight games with fewer than 15 Fantasy points. He hasn't thrown a touchdown pass in the last two, and he's been intercepted in three straight. He was removed in the second half of a Week 11 loss for Matt Schaub, and while his Week 13 performance against New England was an improvement over his previous two games, it still wasn't enough to get him back to the 20-point neighborhood.
Week 14 brings a matchup with the Jaguars, who have allowed the third-most Fantasy points per game (22.3) to opposing quarterbacks this season. Keenum remembers the Jaguars well, as they held him to four Fantasy points (169 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception) in Week 12. In their last five games, the Jaguars have allowed quarterbacks to score 26 or more Fantasy points four times. Three quarterbacks have scored three touchdowns, one has scored two... and then there's Keenum, who just couldn't get anything going in Week 12.
Owners in two-quarterback leagues can look at this matchup and let it at least mitigate the memory of Keenum's Week 12 debacle -- Ben Tate was off, things were messy, Keenum was probably looking over his shoulder at Schaub. Still, Keenum should be on the waiver wire in standard leagues, as he brings considerable risk even in two-quarterback formats.
|Case Keenum gets first rushing TD in Week 13 loss |
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
(12/1/13) Texans quarterback Case Keenum bounced back Week 13 after two poor performances, but he still didn't do enough to lead Houston to a win. Keenum completed 15 of 30 passes for 272 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in a 34-31 loss.
Keenum had an efficient first half, completing 9 of 15 passes for 127 yards as Houston had a 17-7 halftime lead. Though, Keenum's only interception came as Houston was driving for a score in the first half. With Houston at the New England 27-yard line, Keenum was hit as he was about to release the football, which caused the pass to float up in the air and it was picked off by Logan Ryan.
Keenum, however, came back to post a 5-yard rushing touchdown in the second half. On a designed quarterback run, Keenum took the snap out of shotgun formation and ran left behind an offensive lineman for an easy score. It was his first career rushing touchdown.
Still, Keenum went without a passing touchdown for a second straight game, despite a nice performance from star receiver Andre Johnson, who finished with eight catches for 121 yards. The Texans are back in action Week 14 at Jacksonville (Thursday).
|Two years ago Matt Schaub was considered a capable Fantasy starter. Last year he was the guy you took with a great value pick in the middle rounds. This year he'll be a late-round consideration – maybe. Schaub's Fantasy stock tanked last season as he struggled to put up big numbers while younger, more versatile passers put up bigger, better numbers. Those youngsters are now who Fantasy owners are targeting, pushing Schaub down rank lists. Does he have potential for a 4,500 yard, 30 touchdown season? Maybe thanks to big-time targets like Andre Johnson, Arian Foster and rookie DeAndre Hopkins. But outside of those three and maybe tight end Owen Daniels there just isn't a lot to love about Schaub's weapons. Throw in a conservative game plan used by the Texans (Schaub attempted 35 passes or more just six times) and he's just not the crown jewel for Fantasy owners like he was. It doesn't help that he connected for two or more touchdowns seven times in 18 regular and postseason games last year or had just six matchups with 20-plus Fantasy points. Schaub is worth a late-round pick in drafts strictly as a decent backup Fantasy option. (Updated 5/15/13) |
