Falcons re-stock secondary in draft
(5/2/13) The Falcons spent Top-60 picks on Washington's Desmond Trufant and Southeastern Louisiana's Robert Alford, replacing Dunta Robinson and Brent Grimes with some young cornerbacks. Trufant was impressive at the Senior Bowl following a nice career and comes from a family of NFL cornerbacks. Alford has pretty good speed and ball skills. We suspect both will get a good amount of playing time in 2013. The Falcons also took defensive end Malliciah Goodman from Clemson, TCU defensive end Stansly Maponga, safeties Kemal Ishmael (UCF) and Zeke Motta (Notre Dame).
Defensive collapse burns Falcons
(1/20/13) For the second straight week, the Falcons surrendered a massive lead during Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the visiting 49ers. This time, they weren't able to recover. A week after relinquishing a 20-0 halftime lead to Seattle in the divisional playoff game and then rallying for the win, Atlanta was outscored 28-7 after reaching the end zone six seconds into the second quarter. The Falcons' unraveling allowed the 49ers to pull off the biggest comeback victory in an NFC title game, according to STATS. The previous record was 13 points -- Atlanta's victory over Minnesota in the 1999 NFC Championship.
Falcons almost falter
(1/13/13) The Falcons survived a fourth-quarter collapse Sunday against the Seahawks to advance to the NFC Championship game vs. San Francisco. The Atlanta defense shut out Seattle in the first half Sunday and helped the Falcons build a 20-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, the Seahawks ripped off 21 unanswered points and took a 28-27 lead with 31 seconds remaining. Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan then led Atlanta on a quick scoring drive and Matt Bryant sealed the win with a 49-yard field goal. Seattle did rack up 491 yards, including 123 rushing. Atlanta forced two turnovers (one fumble) and sacked quarterback Russell Wilson twice.
Just one pick for Falcons D
(12/30/12) Facing a quarterback in Josh Freeman who had thrown eight interceptions over his last two games, the Falcons managed only one (via Asante Samuel) Week 17 against the Buccaneers. They allowed 22 points on 366 yards, going without a sack or forced fumble.
Falcons bend, dont break vs. Lions
(12/22/12) The Falcons managed to overcome Lions receiver Calvin Johnsons record-breaking day in Week 16 Saturday, in a 31-18 win. The Lions racked up 522 yards of total offense in the game, as Johnson set the NFL single-season record for receiving yards on his way to an 11-catch, 225-yard day. The Falcons made up for the huge yardage totals by keeping the Lions out of the end zone for much of the game, as they allowed just one offensive touchdown in the game. Atlanta forced three turnovers in the game, recovering two fumbles and intercepting Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford once in the game.
