Jeremy Ross a bright spot for disappointing Lions
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(1/13/14) Lions receiver Jeremy Ross took over as the full-time returner for the final six weeks and became a dangerous threat, averaging 29.3 yards on kick returns. His 16.2-yard punt-return average was tops in the NFL among players with at least 15 returns.

“I think I’ve proved I can play at this level, at a high level,” Ross said, per the Detroit Free Press. "Not just play and be mediocre, but actually do some great things in this league, so I’m hoping people see that and hoping I get another opportunity next season.”

Ross returned a kickoff and punt for touchdowns at Philadelphia in Week 14.

Lions DST limits Vikings
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(12/29/13) The Lions DST held the Vikings to 14 points Week 17.

The Lions had a tough time against the running game, but were able to hold the Vikings in check in other areas. They forced an interception from Matt Cassel, and also sacked him three times. Despite allowing Matt Asiata to pick up 115 yards, they did force him to fumble.

Lions can't capitalize on costly mistakes
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12/23/13) The Lions turned in a solid performance defensively, but it was not enough for the win Sunday afternoon against the Giants in Week 16.

Glover Quin picked off Eli Manning late in the fourth quarter and Willie Young recovered a fumble in overtime. The defense sacked Manning twice and allowed 279 yards of total offense in a 23-20 overtime defeat.

The Lions, now eliminated from playoff contention, will end the season at Minnesota in Week 17.
Lions could be in line for a favorable matchup against Giants
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12/20/13) The Lions could be in for another favorable matchup heading into Week 16 at home against the Giants.

Detroit held Baltimore out of the end zone but failed to produce any big plays, as they registered only one sack in an 18-16 defeat in Week 15. The Lions will encounter Eli Manning, who threw for only 156 yards and was picked off five times against Seattle in Week 15. The Lions have allowed 252.9 passing yards, which ranks 23rd in the league this season.

The Lions will also focus on keeping Andre Brown in check, who had 11 carries for a season-low 17 yards on the ground, averaging only 1.7 yards per carry against the Seahawks in Week 15. Detroit has allowed only one 100-yard rusher (LeSean McCoy) since Week 5. The Lions have permitted 98.6 yards per game on the ground, which is the fourth fewest allowed this season.

Opposing DST units have scored 16.07 Fantasy points per game against the Giants. Only two teams were held under 10 Fantasy points against the Giants this season -- the Packers in Week 11 and the Redskins in Week 13. Consider the Lions must-start Fantasy option for Week 16.
Can Jeremy Ross carry Lions DST again?
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12/11/13) The Lions DST enters Week 15 vs. Baltimore as a middle-of-the-pack unit, and that's despite the Herculean efforts of return man Jeremy Ross.

Cut by the Packers in September, Ross returned a punt 58 yards and a kickoff 98 yards for touchdowns in the second half of last week's loss in Philly. That gave the Lions DST four touchdowns this season.

Ross also had a 44-yard kickoff return against Dallas, a 42-yard punt return vs. Tampa Bay and a 35-yard punt return against Green Bay on Thanksgiving.

"As good as he's been, I think he can still get better," special teams coach John Bonamego told the team's website. "He has done a really good job of staying with the plan. He understands where the blocks are supposed to happen. He can see the field.

"He also has a dimension on power," Bonamego added. "He's a bigger guy and thicker through the legs. He's a determined runner. He doesn't go down easily. He can run through some arm tackles and is elusive enough to make that first guy miss and get it started."

Detroit has been decent defensively at home, with double-digit Fantasy points in four of six games. The Ravens give up the 14th-most Fantasy points (9.5 per game) to DSTs, but surrendered only 12 in the last two weeks combined.

It all adds up to the Lions DST being a borderline play Monday night.
