Cardinals bring in Bowles as DC
(1/19/13) Arizona continued its offseason alterations Saturday and agreed to terms with Todd Bowles to become the team's defensive coordinator, CBSSports.com NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reports. Bowles, who served as the Eagles' defensive coordinator after Juan Castillo was fired midway through the past season, replaces Ray Horton on the Cardinals' sideline. During its 5-11 campaign, Arizona ranked fifth in the NFL against the pass (200.8 yards allowed per game), but just 28th defending the run (137.0 yards allowed).
Cards tumble on big plays
(12/30/12) Of the six San Francisco receivers to record a catch in Week 17, Arizona limited five of them to 50 yards or less. Michael Crabtree was the exception of the group. The Cardinals allowed Crabtree to rack up 172 yards receiving and two touchdowns during the 49ers' 27-13 victory in the season finale Sunday. His first touchdown reception came on a 49-yard pass play from Colin Kaepernick in the second quarter as Arizona could not apply any consistent pressure on the quarterback and tallied just one sack on the mobile rookie.
Cardinals feeling rundown
(12/29/12) Throughout the season, stopping the run has been an issue for the the Arizona defense as the unit has remained in the bottom tier of the NFL. It doesn't get any easier in the season finale as the Cardinals have a daunting challenege against the 49ers' stellar running attack which is racking up 157.5 rushing yards per game this season (fourth in the league). In the teams' previous meeting this season, Arizona allowed 113 yards on the ground, including just 55 yards on 16 carries by San Francisco starter Frank Gore.
Cardinals get score on special teams
(12/23/12) The Cardinals were able to limit quarterback Jay Cutler and the Bears through the air in Week 16. Arizona allowed just 145 passing yards but gave up 152 yards on the ground in the 28-13 loss. The Cardinals caused just one turnover but had a huge play on special teams in the fourth quarter. Adrian Wilson blocked an Olindo Mare 20-yard field goal late in the game and Justin Bethel returned it 82 yards for the touchdown.
Cardinals coming after Cutler
(12/21/12) The Cardinals have done well at limiting quarterbacks thus far and will be looking to continue that trend against Jay Cutler and the Bears in Week 16. Arizona boasts the No. 4 pass defense in the NFL, giving up under 200 yards per game, and ranks 28th against the run. Chicago ranks 13th in the league running the ball, putting up over 119 yards per contest, and ranks 28th in passing. Cutler has thrown 14 interceptions on the year.
