Nate Freese wins Lions' kicker battle
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(8/25/14) Lions kicker Nate Freese was announced as the team's starting kicker Monday by head coach Jim Caldwell, DetroitLions.com reports.

"Obviously it was a tough competition, it was a very, very difficult decision and Giorgio (Tavecchio) did a nice job," Caldwell said. "I think both guys took this thing on in a professional manner and Nate ended up edging him out. I think they are both very capable guys but as we look at all the factors, Nate was the best one for us at this time."

Freese was able to make a 55-yard field goal attempt off the dirt at O.co Coliseum in the second preseason game, and it was a kick that helped the rookie kicker stand out in the competition.

Lions could be leaning toward Nate Freese over Giorgio Tavecchio
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7/17/14) The Lions could be leaning toward rookie kicker Nate Freese, on whom the team spent a seventh-round pick, over Giorgio Tavecchio, who has bounced around training camps the past two years, reports ESPN.

Tavecchio has the stronger leg. Freese is likely the more accurate kicker and, due to having a draft pick invested, would appear to be the favorite.

Lions insist they have open kicking competition
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/17/14) The Lions drafted Nate Freese and signed Giorgio Tavecchio this offseason. Both players will compete for the kicking job through the summer, and the job is wide open even though the Lions invested a draft pick in Freese.

"Both guys are thumping it pretty good," coach Jim Caldwell said per MLive.com. "Giorgio's doing a nice job and Nate's doing a nice job as well. So I think it will be a good, healthy competition."

Lions select kicker Nate Freese in final round
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5/10/14) With the 229th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions selected kicker Nate Freese from Boston College. Freese may have a chance to compete with John Potter for the starting gig. Freese made all 20 of his field goal attempts in 2013, and finished his career 70 for 81.
