Ryan Mathews pulls away from Branden Oliver

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(11/24/14) Even though Chargers running back Ryan Mathews was more effective than Branden Oliver in his return from a shoulder injury, he split carries almost evenly with his replacement Week 11 against Oakland. That wasn't so much the case Week 12 against St. Louis, though, when Mathews took his first carry 11 yards and never looked back en route to 105. He also scored a touchdown on a 32-yard run in the third quarter.

He injured his shoulder on that play, which was a big reason why Oliver got the six carries he did, but Mathews returned and still finished with twice as many. Imagine how many yards he would have had if he had gotten 15-to-18 carries.

If Mathews had struggled to keep up with Oliver after the long layoff, the Chargers might continue to ease him in, but since he's been far and away the more effective of the two in two games back, he looks like he'll take the job and run with it, reducing Oliver to just a handcuff option in Fantasy.

Mathews falls a little short of must-start status with an especially tough matchup Week 13 at Baltimore, but for most owners, he's probably still worth running out there.

Chargers get offensive contributions

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(11/23/14) The Chargers got a slew of offensive contributions in their 27-24 win over the Rams on Sunday. Among them, running back Branden Oliver carried six times for 17 yards and caught all four of his targets for 23 yards. Running back Donald Brown caught two passes for 20 yards and had a 7-yard rush.

Tight end Antonio Gates caught both his targets for 14 yards, while tight end Ladarius Green hauled in two of three targets for 34 yards. Wideout Malcom Floyd secured four of five targets for 30 yards.

Wideout Seyi Ajirotutu made an 8-yard grab. They'll all visit the Ravens in Week 13.

Ryan Mathews leads Chargers rushing attack in Week 11 win

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11/16/14) Chargers running back Ryan Mathews returned to action Sunday, rushing for 70 yards on 16 carries and catching his only target for another five yards in his team's 13-6 win over the Raiders in Week 11.

Mathews started out a little slow, gaining a total of one yard on his first three carries, but looked just fine after missing two months with a knee injury. His best carry came early in the third quarter, when he made a slight adjustment after taking the ball to cut through a hole in the defense and then kept his balance after taking his first hit before finally being dragged down with a 20-yard gain.

Running mate Branden Oliver also received 13 carries in a game that the Chargers led for more than 59 minutes. However, Oliver averaged just 2.8 yards per carry, gaining only 36 yards on the ground while adding one catch for three yards. Mathews will likely remain the No. 1 option in the running game moving forward while healthy. The Chargers move on to face the Rams in Week 12.

Ryan Mathews returns to lead role

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11/16/14) Charges running back Ryan Mathews took the lead role back from  Branden Oliver in Week 11, after missing seven games with a knee injury.

The Chargers didn't really ease Mathews back in too much, as he touched the ball 17 times in the win. The blowout still left Oliver plenty of opportunities to contribute, as he added 13 carries, but was far less effective than Mathews, rushing for 34 fewer yards on just three fewer carries.

There is no question Mathews is the better option in the backfield, so it was good to see get something close to a full workload in his return. The Chargers trust Oliver enough to keep him involved, but Mathews is likely to get 15-20 touches per game. He should be a solid Fantasy option down the stretch, while Oliver will likely be just a handcuff option for Mathews owners.

Branden Oliver fails to impress in possible final start

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11/2/14) Chargers running back Branden Oliver looked like a star earlier in the season, but after another subpar outing in Week 9 against the Dolphins, his role moving forward has to be in question.

Oliver rushed for just 19 yards on 13 carries Sunday, and added just one reception for 7 yards in a 37-0 loss. He now has just 55 yards on 26 carries over the last two games, and has seen his workload reduced in each game, from a season-high 30 touches in Week 5 to just 14 Sunday.

Oliver is going to see a reduced role down the stretch, with Ryan Mathews likely to return to action after the team's Week 10 bye. Oliver might be best left as a flex option beginning with Week 11 against the Raiders.
