Niners' late rally falls short
(2/3/13) The 49ers defense could't get the job done against the Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII Sunday night. San Francisco allowed 367 yards of offense, including 287 yards passing from Joe Flacco. Flacco also fired three touchdown passes to torch San Francisco in a 34-31 defeat. The 49ers sacked Flacco just two times and only forced one turnover on the night -- a Ray Rice fumble recovered by Tarell Brown. The Ravens also gave them an intentional safety in the final seconds of the game.
Ravens will be a challenge for Niners
(1/31/13) The 49ers defense is among the best in the NFL, but they'll have their hands full against the Ravens in the Super Bowl. San Francisco's already faced a pair of pass-dominant offenses on its way to the big game, allowing 31 points to the Packers and 24 points to the Falcons. The Ravens have scored 24-plus points in each of their three postseason games, racking up over 350 yards in each. Quarterback Joe Flacco has yet to throw an interception and has been sacked just four times over the three games.
49ers can't keep up with Jones
(1/20/13) Tasked with stopping another lethal passing attack in Sunday's NFC Championship Game at Atlanta, the San Francisco defense scuffled early before clamping down after halftime. The 49ers permitted a pair of touchdowns to Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones, who finished with 182 yards on 11 carries, in the first 16 minutes of the game before holding Atlanta scoreless in the second half for a 28-24 victory. A week after surrendering 31 points to Green Bay, San Francisco seemed poised to let the Falcons run away with a win, but yielded only one touchdown after Jones' second score at the 14:54 mark of the second quarter.
49ers limit potent Packers
(1/12/13) The 49ers defense kept the Packers in check for most of Saturdays Division round playoff game, on their way to a 45-31 win. Though the Packers scored 31 points in the game, San Francisco held them to just 352 yards of total offense. One of the Packers touchdowns came on defense, so San Francisco held them to 24 points on offense. The 49ers forced a pair of turnovers in the game, and added one sack.
San Francisco a Cards shark
(1/12/13) The San Francisco defense forced two turnovers and held Arizona to only two field goals until late in the fourth quarter during a 27-13 victory in Week 17. Against a quarterback making his first career NFL start in Brian Hoyer, the 49ers managed two sacks while also picking him off once. The only touchdown they allowed came with 1:59 remaining in the fourth quarter when Hoyer connected with Michael Floyd on a desperation heave of 37 yards. It was just the third score for an opposing wide receiver over the past five games against San Francisco.
