| Justin Smith signs two-year extension |
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer (12:36 pm ET) Defensive end Justin Smith has signed a two-year extension through the 2015 season with the 49ers, according to Comcast Sportsnet. Smith wouldn't speculate much on his future a week ago when meeting with the media but did say he will be ready for training camp after playing through a triceps injury last year and having surgery for it during the offseason.

| Smith will need 3 months off |
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer (2/5/13) The man known as Cowboy wasn't going to miss the Super Bowl. But maybe Justin Smith should have sat out. Limited by a partially torn left triceps, the 49ers' defensive end struggled. Smith finished with three tackles -- with no quarterback hurries, hits or sacks. Now comes word, via Comcast Sports Net, that the 33-year-old Smith will undergo surgery this week and need three months of rehab. The four-time Pro Bowler suffered the injury Dec. 16 against New England and missed the rest of the regular season. He returned for the playoffs wearing a brace on his left arm.

| Smith says he'll need surgery |
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer (1/30/13) Comcast Sportsnet reports Niners defensive end Justin Smith will need surgery on his torn left triceps this offseason. He's expected to be ready for training camp and has no plans to retire.

| Justin Smith is a solid No. 2 defensive lineman in IDP leagues, and he should fully recover from last year's torn triceps muscle. In 2012, Smith had a down year with just 66 tackles (47 solo) and three sacks. He missed two games with the triceps injury in December, but he returned for the playoffs. He's never had double digits in sacks in his 10-year career, but he's had at least seven six times, including two of the past three years. Plan on drafting Smith with a late-round pick in all leagues. (Updated 4/25/13) |
