|Justin Smith ready to go after shoulder surgery |
|by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com|
(7/23/14) 49ers defensive lineman Justin Smith had offseason shoulder surgery to repair damage he sustained in camp a year ago, reports CSNBayArea.com. Smith, 34, spent the offseason rehabbing and missed all the on-field drills.
But Smith, who did not miss a game last year, says he's ready to go. "I feel healthy compared to last year," Smith said. "I feel a lot better than I did last year. This is it. This is the one I’m thinking about."
|Justin Smith has procedure, will be fine for camp |
|by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer|
(6/18/14) 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said Wednesday that defensive end Justin Smith had a procedure and is expected to be cleared for training camp. Comcast Sportsnet noted that Smith dealt with a shoulder injury last season and that could be what was fixed during the offseason.
|49ers reduced Justin Smith's snaps |
|by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com|
(1/29/14) 49ers defensive tackle Justin Smith played 73.3 percent of the team's defensive snaps, a big drop from previous years, reports CSNBayArea.com. San Francisco's depth on the defensive line, including Tony Jerod-Eddie and Demarcus Dobbs, enabled coaches to give the 34-year-old Smith more rest.
Smith still was highly productive, getting 49 tackles, 6.5 sacks and a forced fumble. He's signed through 2015.
|Nine injured 49ers cleared for NFC Championship |
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
(1/19/14) The 49ers listed the following players as active for Sunday's NFC Championship game against the Seahawks in Seattle, despite being on the injury report: linebacker NaVorro Bowman (wrist), linebacker Ahmad Brooks (illness), wide receiver Michael Crabtree (wrist), defensive lineman Demarcus Dobbs (knee, shoulder), running back Frank Gore (knee), defensive back Carlos Rogers (hamstring), linebacker Dan Skuta (foot), defensive lineman Justin Smith (shoulder) and defensive lineman Will Tukuafu (knee).
|49ers defense in good shape for championship game |
|by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com|
(1/17/14) The 49ers defense should be at something close to full strength for the NFC Championship game against the Seahawks Sunday, as only two players are considered to be in doubt base on the injury report. Defensive lineman Will Tukuafu (knee) and defensive back Carlos Rogers (hamstring) are both questionable for Sunday's game after being limited at times during the week in practice.
The remainder of the team's injury report is made up of players who are expected to play through their maladies. Defensive linemen Justin Smith (shoulder) and Demarcus Dobbs (knee, shoulder), linebackers NaVorro Bowman (wrist), Dan Skuta (foot) and Ahmad Brooks (illness) are all probable for the game.
|Justin Smith is no longer a must-start defensive lineman in IDP leagues, but he is a good reserve or spot starter heading into this season. Smith had just 6.5 sacks and 49 total tackles (32 solo) in 2013. He now has just 9.5 sacks the past two years, and the 49ers continue to reduce his workload at 35 years old when the season starts. Smith will still be good for a handful of sacks, but he's only worth drafting with a late-round pick in deep IDP leagues this season.
