Preseason Outlook

Betts will be more of a factor: The Washington Post reports Redskins RB Clinton Portis could be losing some carries to Ladell Betts this season. The report states: "There may very well be more room for Betts to make an impact this season. At the very least, Betts is expected to get more carries as the team looks to lessen the strain on Portis and keep the workhorse healthy. That was the plan last season before Betts's injuries kept him from factoring in heavily, so don't be surprised if he is much more involved in 2009."

Fantasy Analysis

Now, we don't expect Portis to decline in production, and a few less carries could help him overall for the season, but we also don't want to see Portis standing on the sideline for long stretches. This should tell you to add Betts with a late-round pick in all leagues as a handcuff option for Portis, who remains a No. 1 option worth a pick at the end of Round 1 in all leagues.

2009 Fantasy outlooks: Washington Redskins
The Redskins tried to trade Jason Campbell -- twice -- and landed the biggest free agent on the market this summer. How are they shaping up for Fantasy purposes? Our Dave Richard takes a closer look.

Two years removed from his out-of-nowhere 1,000-yard season, Ladell Betts spent 2008 continuing to aid Clinton Portis in the Redskins' rushing duties. Betts had 61 carries for 206 yards (3.4 avg.) with a touchdown, adding 22 catches for 200 yards (9.1 avg.). Betts will be 30 before the start of the season and will see his salary nearly double from 2009 to 2010. This could very well be his final year with the Redskins, and the fact that he's a backup doesn't help his case with Fantasy owners, either. He's nothing more than a late-round pick as insurance for those owners who take Portis with a Top-15 selection on Draft Day. (Updated 3/19/09)
