Preseason Outlook

Morris ready to backup Smith: According to a report, Lions RB Maurice Morris will make a good backup to starter Kevin Smith. Morris, an eight-year veteran, has done well as a backup in Seattle, said mlive.com. The Lions brought in Morris an unrestricted free agent this offseason to be the backup to Smith, who will carry the bulk of the workload.

Fantasy Analysis

Morris doesn't have great breakaway speed -- in 604 career carries he has just 15 carries of 20 yards or more -- but he's extremely versatile and can fill any role in which the Lions need him. Morris is also a very good receiver out of the backfield so don't be surprised to see him in the backfield at the same time with Smith. Morris is a good late-round flier in all Fantasy leagues because Smith is unproven as a starter, and the Lions will likely use Morris in different roles to keep Smith fresh.

2009 Fantasy outlooks: Seattle Seahawks

Maurice Morris left the fairly relevant perch he was on with the Seahawks and signed with the Lions this offseason. In Detroit, he'll work on special teams and aid Kevin Smith with the rushing workload. The Lions are expected to run the ball a decent amount, so Morris might be in line for close to seven touches per week. That's not going to be enough to start him, but he warrants a pick late in drafts, especially as an insurance policy for those owners who draft Smith with a Top-30 selection. (Updated 3/17/09)
