Preseason Outlook

QB Smith not backing down from Hill: The San Francisco Chronicle had an offseason minicamp wrap-up feature that highlighted Alex Smith's progression from unmotivated backup to potential starter. Smith reportedly dazzled in the club's final minicamp, throwing accurately and leading several scoring drives in red-zone drills while Shaun Hill, the incumbent, didn't fare as well. The paper also noted that Hill has long been a slow learner, even in weeks during the season when he'd look awful on Wednesday, tune up by Friday and play well on Sunday (he's 7-3 as a starter). It all adds up to a training camp battle that head coach Mike Singletary previously called a "great competition."

Fantasy Analysis

With all the news and hub-bub we've delivered this spring, we still feel like this is Hill's job to lose. But with so much up in the air, Hill can't be trusted as anything more than a sleeper for 2009. He'll be worth a late-round draft pick this summer as a No. 2 Fantasy QB -- and that's assuming he is the starter. Smith isn't even worth a draft pick at this point -- let him prove to you that he's capable of starting for the Niners first before giving him the nod with a valuable draft choice. Let's not forget one thing: Frank Gore is the heart and soul of this offense, and that means whomever wins the QB job won't be in line for a glut of stats so long as Gore is healthy.

2009 Fantasy outlooks: San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers have some interesting pieces in place for 2009 and an enthusiastic head coach, but what does all of that mean for Fantasy owners? Our Dave Richard puts San Francisco under the microscope.

A year after finishing strong for the Niners, Shaun Hill finally got a crack at playing on an extended basis for a chunk of 2008. In eight starts, Hill completed 181-of-288 passes (62.8 pct.) for 2,046 yards (7.10 yards per attempt) with 13 touchdowns, two fumbles lost and eight interceptions. Hill also rushed for two touchdowns and padded his stat line with 115 rushing yards. Pretty good totals, right? Not if you ask the 49ers, who signed Damon Huard and have a reinvigorated Alex Smith on the roster to compete with him. Thankfully, the Niners didn't draft a quarterback with a prominent pick -- but they did draft Texas Tech WR Michael Crabtree to help boost their receiving corps. Though the team will have a new offensive coordinator in '09 -- they're expected to be very run oriented -- Hill should come out of camp with the starting gig. If that happens, we like him as a sneaky sleeper of a No. 2 Fantasy QB well worth a late-round pick in all leagues. (Updated 4/28/09)
