Andre Johnson said he laughed when told he wasn't full-time starter

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3/3/15) Disgruntled Texans wideout Andre Johnson said coach Bill O'Brien told him last week that the team didn't consider Johnson a likely starter any more, reports the Houston Chronicle. Johnson, who caught a team-high 85 passes last year, also said O'Brien also told him the Texans anticipated him catching about 40 balls this season.

"I just laughed," Johnson told the paper. "They gave me my role, and I just laughed at them. How do you tell a guy who is used to catching 80 balls a year that he was going to catch 40?"

Johnson added he was "floored" about the comment that he probably wasn't a full-time starter. "I don't feel like there is a guy on that team that can outplay me or outwork me," Johnson said. "I mean, who am I going to play behind?

"So I was real honest with him: 'If that's your role for me, you're going to be dealing with a miserable football player.'"

The relationship between Johnson and the team has deteriorated to the point that Houston is expected to cut Johnson if it can't trade him. Johnson, 33, is the franchise's most accomplished player, with 1,012 career catches for 13,597 yards and 64 touchdowns.

He's scheduled to make $10.5 million and count $16.1 million against the cap this season.

Report: Texans' Andre Johnson given permission to seek trade

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(3/2/15) Wide receiver Andre Johnson has been given permission by the Texans to seek a trade, according to a report from the Houston Chronicle

The Texans told Johnson that he'd have a reduced role this upcoming season opposite of DeAndre Hopkins. Therefore, Johnson wanted out of his deal. If a trade cannot be made with a suitor, Johnson will be released

Johnson was the third overall pick in the 2003 NFL draft and is the greatest player in the history of the Texans. He's recorded 1,012 catches, 13,597 yards and 64 touchdowns in his career.

A trade could be difficult, however, based on Johnson's upcoming $16.1 million cap figure and $10.5 million base salary for the 2015 season.

Report: Texans want WR Andre Johnson to take pay cut

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(2/25/15) Receiver Andre Johnson has long been a staple of the Texans organization. But if he's unwilling to renegotiate his current contract, there's a chance Houston will part ways with him.

According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, the Texans could cut Johnson if he's unwilling to take a pay cut. Johnson is due a $10.5 million base salary and is carrying a cap figure of over $16.1 million. Cutting Johnson would save the Texans $8.825 million in cap space.

Johnson played in 15 games a year ago and caught 85 passes for 936 yards and three touchdowns. A 12-year veteran, Johnson was taken with the third overall pick by Houston in the 2003 draft.

Texans' O'Brien: We don't want Andre Johnson to play anywhere else

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(2/19/15) Texans general manager Rick Smith told reporters that Larry Fitzgerald's restructured deal won't impact Andre Johnson's situation in Houston. Coach Bill O'Brien also backed up Smith's comments, reiterating that the team wants Johnson to retire as a Texan.

"We don't want him to play anywhere else. He's a Houston Texan," O'Brien said, per the team's official website.

Johnson, 33, appeared in 15 games in 2014, but had his arguably his worst statistical season. He finished with 85 catches for 936 yards and three touchdowns. He is due to make $10.5 million in 2015, and $11 million in 2016 before becoming a free agent in 2017.

DeAndre Hopkins in elite company after two seasons

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/3/15) DeAndre Hopkins' first two seasons compare favorably to those of his teammate, Andre Johnson, the greatest player in Texans' history, notes the team's website.

Hopkins has caught 128 passes for 2,012 yards and eight touchdowns while playing with a carousel of quarterbacks. In Johnson's first two years, playing mainly with quarterback David Carr, he hauled in 145 balls for 2,118 yards and 10 scores.

Hopkins bested Johnson in yards per catch (15.7 to 14.6) but had 360 fewer yards after the catch.

Hopkins won't turn 23 until June. With Johnson slowing down at age 33 -- he averaged 62.4 receiving yards, lowest since 2005 -- Hopkins enters 2015 as the team's most explosive option, a solid bet to lead Houston in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
