Antonio Gates expects to be back with Chargers in 2015
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(12/29/14) Although he will be 35 years old next season, tight end Antonio Gates expects to be back with the Chargers next year for his 13th season in the NFL. Gates is slated to make $5.9 million in 2015, which is the final year of a six-year, $40 million deal he signed in 2010.
"Yeah, I feel good," Gates said, per ESPN. "Obviously, when you finish a season, you’re going to have some soreness, with the wear and tear of an NFL season. But for the most part, I feel like I’m a Charger for life. That’s my gut feeling. I try to do everything to display that on the football field.
"But I still understand that things happen. And you can control only what you control -- your attitude, your passion and how you go about your business. Those are the staples of who I am. I try to lead by example, and that’s what I’ll do this offseason."
Gates has played a full season two years in a row. He totaled 12 touchdowns in 2014, as well as totaling more than 800 receiving yards for a second straight season.
Chargers TE Gates snags four in Week 17 loss

|(12/28/14) A bad afternoon for the Chargers was a mediocre one for veteran tight end Antonio Gates.
Gates tried to put up some decent numbers in the loss to Kansas City that knocked his team out of the playoffs. He caught four passes for 67 yards. He was targeted six times.
Gates also became the 44th player in NFL history to amass 10,000 receiving yards in his career.
He ends the season with 69 receptions for 820 yards.
Several benefit from Keenan Allen's absence
|by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer|
|(12/21/14) With wide receiver Keenan Allen sidelined by a broken collarbone Week 16 at San Francisco, wide receiver Eddie Royal saw the biggest increase in targets for the Chargers. He led the team with 12, catching 10 passes for 94 yards. But wide receiver Malcom Floyd and tight end Antonio Gates saw an increase as well. Floyd's 10 were a season high. He caught four of them for 50 yards and a score. Gates' nine were tied for his second most this season. he caught two touchdown passes for the first time since Week 8.
For the most part, Gates has gone as quarterback Philip Rivers has gone this season, so maybe his resurgence was more a product of Rivers throwing for 356 yards and four scores than Allen's absence. Likewise, Floyd has been Rivers' downfield threat all season and has had games with similar numbers, even if the targets were less, so if you're going to add a player in Fantasy (not that you could add Gates, of course), it should probably be Royal.
Of course, the four touchdown passes were out of character for Rivers, at least going by recent weeks, so against one of the league's best pass defenses Week 17 at Kansas City, he's unlikely to repeat those numbers. And in that case, Royal's would likely suffer as well. It's not like Allen was consistently delivering for Fantasy owners, so maybe outside of deeper leagues, it's best to pass on Royal altogether.
Chargers TE Antonio Gates scores twice in Week 16 win
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(12/21/14) Chargers tight end Antonio Gates caught seven of his nine targets for 92 yards with two touchdowns in his team's 38-35 overtime win over the 49ers in Week 16.
Gates had a quiet first half but helped lead the charge to come back from a three-touchdown deficit. His first score was on a one-yard catch on third-and-goal that he juggled a bit, but he was able to hang on while taking a hit at the goal line. His second score was on a wide-open 21-yard reception in the fourth quarter to bring his team to within one touchdown.
It was the fourth multiscore game of the season for Gates, who is now up to 65 receptions, 754 yards and 12 touchdowns on the season. He'll match up with the Chiefs in Week 17.
Chargers' Antonio Gates catches 70th touchdown from Rivers

|(12/14/14) While Chargers tight end Antonio Gates was able to reach the end zone, it was not enough to defeat the Broncos Sunday.
Gates was able to hook up with quarterback Philip Rivers for their 70th touchdown reception, but the Chargers lost 22-10. The 70th touchdown pass between the pair came on a 5-yard pass in third quarter. It was the first time Gates was able to reach the end zone since Oct. 23 against the Broncos.
The Chargers next play Saturday at Kansas City.
|Antonio Gates appears to be at the end of his line as a starting Fantasy tight end. He had a down year in 2013 with 77 catches for 872 yards and four touchdowns, which was his lowest total since his rookie season in 2003. At 34, his best days are behind him, and the Chargers will likely increase the playing time for Ladarius Green, which should further cut into Gates' production. Now, if Gates can get back to scoring at least seven touchdowns, which he did from 2004-12, with his catches and yards from last season then he would regain some value in most Fantasy leagues. But after watching him play last year, and seeing the upside with Green, it's hard to count on Gates as a must-start option. At best, plan on drafting Gates with a late-round pick in the majority of leagues, but he's best suited to be a bye-week or injury replacement. If Gates starts off the season playing well then add him off waivers, and we hope he can prove us wrong and return as a No. 1 option in all leagues.
