Reid: Chiefs will keep 3-4 defense: New Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Monday he intends to keep the team in a 3-4 defense, which they've used for four seasons prior to his arrival. Reid ran a 4-3 scheme in Philadelphia for 14 years. "There's been time invested in the 3-4 here," Reid said per the Kansas City Star. "The 3-4 gives you some flexibility. I've run both (defensive systems). I've been involved in both so I understand how they were. The 4-3 is good if you have the right coaches in place and the team is invested in it. But this team here is invested in the 3-4, so lets continue to build it and get better at it." (Updated 1/15/13) |

This isn't like when Reid named offensive line coach Juan Castillo the Eagles' defensive coordinator a couple of years ago -- Reid will hand over the defense to coordinator Bob Sutton and let him manage the personnel there. Sutton spent many seasons working with the Jets' 3-4 defense. With a couple of good pass rushers, linebackers and defensive backs in Kansas City, the defense is not far from being an effective one. Chances are they'll still get passed over on Draft Day. (Updated 1/15/13). |
| The Chiefs DST has potential to be a solid unit in 2013. They just have to play up to their level of talent. The Chiefs have Pro Bowl players in Tamba Hali, Derrick Johnson and Eric Berry, and Justin Houston had double digits in sacks in 2012. But even with that the Chiefs still finished second-to-last in Fantasy points. They were near the bottom or last in sacks (27), interceptions (seven), fumble recoveries (six) and points allowed (425). New defensive coordinator Bob Sutton has his work cut out for him, and we hope the Chiefs DST can improve. They won't get drafted in the majority of leagues, but they should be considered a bye-week replacement in most formats. (Updated 4/26/13) |
