Ravens catch Patriots by surprise: After rolling past Houston last week, New England was likely under the impression it could dispatch Baltimore and its inconsistent offense to complete another march to the Super Bowl. Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco had other ideas and stunned the Patriots secondary for three touchdown passes in a 28-13 victory at New England in the AFC Championship Game on Sunday. The Patriots failed to generate an interception on Flacco and mustered just two sacks as they allowed 21 unanswered points in the second half to seal the loss.

Sparked by improvements in several areas, the New England defense experienced a dramatic turnaround this season and ranked ninth in the NFL against the run (101.9 yards allowed per game). The Patriots also ranked among the top five in the league with 20 interceptions and returned two of them for touchdowns, the highlight of a revamped secondary. New England was in the middle of the pack in sacks (37 total), but should still be viewed as a quality DST option in the late rounds of most Fantasy drafts heading into next season.

| The Patriots DST has the potential to be great in 2013, but they need to be more consistent. The Patriots DST had some big games in 2012 with at least 20 Fantasy points in a standard league in four games, but they also had single digits in five other outings. The good thing for the Patriots is they create plenty of turnovers with 20 interceptions and 21 fumble recoveries. This is now the third year in a row with at least 34 turnovers. A more consistent pass rush would help since they had just 36 sacks in 2012, which is the third year in a row they’ve been at 40 or fewer. But with Bill Belichick at the helm, the Patriots defense will always be among the best in the NFL. They are worth drafting as a Top 10 option in all leagues and should be taken with a late-round pick. (Updated 4/26/13) |
