Preseason Outlook

Breaston works while Boldin holds out: As Anquan Boldin stays away in a contract dispute, Steve Breaston has confidently moved up to the No. 2 wide receiver spot for the Cardinals. Breaston knows how important these spring and summer practices can be. It was a year ago that Breaston opened the eyes of coaches with his talent and effort. The speedy receiver went on to become Arizona's third 1,000-yard receiver in 2008, catching 77 passes for 1,006 yards, an average of 13.1 yards per catch. Breaston has worked with the first-team offense so far this offseason and is glad to have his coaches' trust and to prove the naysayers wrong. "I told a lot of people that once I left my school there was a big cloud lifted," Breaston said. "What they said back in college or what I did in college, it doesn't determine where I'm going or what I'm going to do in this league. When I got here, I had a chip on my shoulder but the cloud was gone. No matter what people say, they can't determine the outcome I will have in the NFL."

Fantasy Analysis

Breaston's best numbers last year came when Boldin was hurt -- in four games without Boldin, he totaled 22 catches for 276 yards and two touchdowns. However, Breaston also had eight games with at least six receptions, and only two of those games came without Boldin. We think Breaston will continue to be effective, but touchdowns will come on a limited basis, and it does help that he'll be a restricted free agent after this season, his third in the NFL, so motivation shouldn't be a problem. You can still consider him a No. 3 Fantasy WR worth a pick between Rounds 7 and 9 in drafts this summer.

Cardinals WR: Steve Breaston
Steve Breaston filled in admirably for Anquan Boldin during the year and might elevate into a No. 2 receiver for the Cards if the club deals Boldin this offseason.

Steve Breaston's breakout season with the Cardinals saw him catch 7 passes for 1,006 yards (13.1 avg.) with a trio of 100-yard games. He also scored three times. Breaston filled in admirably for Anquan Boldin during the year and might elevate into a No. 2 receiver for the Cards if the club deals Boldin this offseason. He'll be a third-year WR in '09 and should be nearly as effective as he was this season, and then he'll be a restricted free agent after next season. Suffice to say, there's a lot to like about Breaston judging by his status -- consider him a sleeper in 2009 worth a middle- to late-round pick in drafts. (Updated 3/18/09)
