Bills steal ex-Jet Pettine: The new defensive coordinator for the Bills will be former Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. Pettine has spent his entire pro career involved with a base 3-4 defense and could move the Bills to such a front after they changed to a 4-3 last year. The Jets ranked as a Top 6 pass defense in each of Pettine's four years and a Top 13 run defense in each of his first three years before bottoming out at 26th in 2012. It's also worth noting that the Jets DST finished as a Top 12 unit in 2009 and 2010 but not the last two seasons. The Bills defense has been suspect for a while, especially against the run, so they could use the help. "We'll be a multiple front, multiple coverage defense," Pettine said. "The trademark of our defense is were going to be smart, tough and relentless. How we configure it is more player-driven. I've always believed that you dont fit your players to your scheme, but you fit your scheme to your players." (Updated 1/9/13) |

The Jets had exceptional pass defenders who helped them attain such high marks defensively under Pettine so he'll have quite a task to convert the talent the Bills have into being effective as a unit. With cornerback Stephon Gilmore and defensive linemen like Kyle Williams, Marcell Dareus and Mario Williams, he'll have pieces in place to do such a thing. Feel free to keep tabs on the Bills DST this offseason but don't expect to draft them unless they make big splashes in free agency and the draft and draw an easy matchup in Week 1. (Updated 1/9/13). |
| The Bills DST had a lot of hype in 2012 after signing Mario Williams, but the addition didn't change much. The Bills DST was a middle-of-the-pack option with 30 sacks (one more than 2011), and they allowed 395 points, which was tied with Denver for third worst in the NFL. The Bills DST did have 29 takeaways (20 interceptions) and scored four touchdowns, but the unit has plenty of work to do under new coordinator Mike Pettine, who held the same position with the Jets last year. The Jets were known for creative blitz packages, which should help the pass rush, but this unit has a lot to prove before Fantasy owners can trust them. (Updated 4/25/13) |
