Bills steal ex-Jet Pettine

(1/9/13) The new defensive coordinator for the Bills will be former Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. Pettine has spent his entire pro career involved with a base 3-4 defense and could move the Bills to such a front after they changed to a 4-3 last year. The Jets ranked as a Top 6 pass defense in each of Pettine's four years and a Top 13 run defense in each of his first three years before bottoming out at 26th in 2012. It's also worth noting that the Jets DST finished as a Top 12 unit in 2009 and 2010 but not the last two seasons. The Bills defense has been suspect for a while, especially against the run, so they could use the help. "We'll be a multiple front, multiple coverage defense," Pettine said. "The trademark of our defense is we’re going to be smart, tough and relentless. How we configure it is more player-driven. I've always believed that you don’t fit your players to your scheme, but you fit your scheme to your players."

Gailey, staff buffaloed by Bills

(12/31/12) After winning just 16 games in three seasons as coach, the Bills relieved Chan Gailey of his duties on Monday, the team announced. Buffalo upended the Jets in the season finale to finish 6-10 for the second straight season as the team faltered on defense yet again. The Bills finished 22nd in total defense, including a No. 31 ranking in the NFL against the run. Gailey announced offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins and defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt were also dismissed. "I understand this is a business," Gailey said. "We didn’t get the job done."

Bills stack up Sanchez, Jets

(12/30/12) After being routed 48-28 in the season opener against the Jets, the Bills were able to exact some revenge during the teams' Week 17 meeting. And Buffalo knew exactly where to target New York: the quarterback position. Bills defensive back Bryan Scott picked off Mark Sanchez, who was inserted back into the starting lineup Sunday following a one-game benching, and returned the interception 20 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. Buffalo also recorded a sack on Sanchez and held the Jets to three field goals in a 28-9 victory.

Bills out to avoid repeat showing

(12/29/12) During its first meeting of the season against the Jets, Buffalo was taken by surprise as New York rolled up 21 unanswered points to open the game en route to a 48-28 win at home. The Bills are hoping to avoid another early blitz during the teams' matchup in Week 17 at Buffalo. The visitors struggled to slow down Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, who accounted for three touchdowns and was only picked off once -- the only turnover the Bills forced in the season opener. Buffalo ranks 13th in the NFL against the pass (218.3 yards allowed per game).

Bills do little to stop Miami

(12/23/12) The Bills limited the Dolphins offense to just 301 total yards Sunday in Week 16, but Miami proved too opportunistic for the Bills in the end. Miami scored three touchdowns offensively despite the lack of yards, and the Bills were unable to force any turnovers in the game. Buffalo sacked quarterback Ryan Tannehill two times, and had no contributions from the special teams, in a 24-10 loss.
