49ers GM Trent Baalke: Team wants to keep Davis, Smith
|by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer|
|(8/5/15) The 49ers have the intent to try and keep tight end Vernon Davis and linebacker Aldon Smith, according to NFL.com.
49ers general manager Trent Baalke said that the team's future is one where both Davis and Smith are cornerstones of the franchise.
Smith, who has had conduct issues in the past, is still perceived as a key player on the team and Baalke wants him around for the long run.
"He's in his contract year," he said. "He's poised to have a very good year. We expect him to have a very good year. I think he expects himself to have a very good year. We're going to work hard to make sure that he remains here."
Davis, who the 49ers drafted in the first round back in 2006, will likely retired in San Francisco if the team keeps him around after his current contract.
"We're always going to try to keep our own. Sometimes it works. As you've seen, sometimes it doesn't," Baalke said. "But Vernon and I have had conversations, and we'll leave it at that. He understands where we are, and we certainly understand where he is."
Niners TE Davis rededicating himself in offseason
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(4/14/15) Was the statistical slide experienced by one-time 49ers standout tight end Vernon Davis in 2014 a one-year wonder or downward trend? Davis is working to increase the chance that it is the former.
Davis has told the team website that he has placed a great emphasis this offseason on a strength and conditioning program. He had skipped that last year to concentrate on landing a new contract, but has since put aside that distraction.
"I'm here this year because I want to get better," he said. "I want to win. I want to develop some chemistry amongs my teammates and get to know guys. There are a lot of new guys here and you just never know when this game is over for you." He added that he wanted to give football "all I can give it."
Davis caught just 26 passes for a career-low 245 yards last year.
49ers' Vernon Davis says Colin Kaepernick looks like a different guy
|by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com|
|(4/10/15) 49ers tight end Vernon Davis spoke to media members Friday and said he likes the improvements Colin Kaepernick has made to his game, according to the team.
"You guys are in for a treat," Davis said. "He looks like a totally different guy."
Kaepernick has been working with former quarterback Kurt Warner to improve his mechanics within the pocket.
"I just want to do everything I can to get better and do what I can to help this team win," Kaepernick said.
49ers backup pass catchers do little Week 14
|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
|(12/7/14) The 49ers backup pass catchers did little Week 14 against the Raiders.
Tight end Vernon Davis hauled in two passes, gaining 26 yards. Garrett Celek had just one catch, gaining 22 yards. Fullback Bruce Miller also had one catch, but made it count. In the first quarter, Miller hauled in an 8 yard touchdown reception from Colin Kaepernick.
The trio will take on the Seahawks Week 15.
49ers' pass catchers share very small pie in loss vs. Seahawks
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(11/28/14) There wasn't much offense to go around for the 49ers' wide receivers and tight ends in the team's 19-3 loss to the Seahawks in Week 13, with wide receiver Steve Johnson leading the receiving unit with three catches for just 28 yards.
Running back Carlos Hyde led the team with 38 receiving yards, but there was simply no offense to speak of for the 49ers on Thanksgiving. Wide receiver Anquan Boldin caught three of his five targets for just 18 yards, while teammate Michael Crabtree managed just 10 yards on three catches of his own. Tight end Vernon Davis kicked in two receptions for 13 yards.
The 49ers will hope for a big bounce-back performance in Week 14 against the Raiders.
|Vernon Davis might have been better off not playing in 2014 than the performance he delivered, and it's hard to imagine him getting worse this year. Davis had 26 catches for 245 yards and two touchdowns, easily his worst stats since his rookie year. He declined by 11 touchdowns from 2013 and saw just one red-zone target last season. Maybe Davis, 31, is slowing down, or maybe his absence from last year's offseason program led to the down year. He said he'll participate in this year's offseason program, but the 49ers have upgraded their receiving corps with the addition of Torrey Smith and Reggie Bush, which will take away targets. We still think Davis has something to offer, but he's only worth a late-round flier with the hope a rebound is coming. If he struggles again early in the season, he's an easy player to cut -- if he even gets drafted.
