Mingo latest addition for Browns D
(5/6/13) The Browns have been busy this offseason, adding talent via free agency but making the biggest splash in the NFL draft. Free agents Paul Kruger, Quentin Groves and Desmond Bryant were added to the front seven with Kruger and Groves specifically there to help the pass rush. That unit was bolstered with first-round pick Barkevious Mingo joining the crew with a first-round pick in April. The Browns also added cornerback Chris Owens from the Falcons, rookie defensive backs Leon McFadden and Jamoris Slaughter and high-risk prospect Armonty Bryant.
Browns hire Horton
(1/18/13) The Browns named Ray Horton as defensive coordinator, the team announced Friday. He served in the same capacity the previous two seasons (2011-12) with the Arizona Cardinals. Hortons resume includes 19 years of experience coaching in the NFL, following a 10-year playing career as a defensive back. We are truly excited that we were able to get someone of Rays caliber as our defensive coordinator, said Browns coach Rob Chudzinski. He possesses a great deal of experience as a player, position coach and coordinator in the NFL and has been part of some of the top defenses in the league throughout his career. He is an extremely talented coach and I know that he will work very well with the young nucleus of players we have on defense."
Browns limit the yards
(12/30/12) Cleveland did a good job of limiting Pittsburghs offense in Week 17 Sunday, as the Steelers ended up with just 212 yards of total offense in 53 plays. Unfortunately, the Browns offense kept turning the ball over and leaving the defense to defend a short field. As a result, the Browns wound up losing 24-10. They failed to force a turnover in the game, and came up with just a pair of sacks.
Browns hope to slow Steelers in rematch
(12/29/12) Cleveland toppled the Steelers the last time the two teams matched up, as they forced eight Steelers turnovers in a 20-14 win in Week 12. Cleveland is unlikely to have similar success in Week 17 against Pittsburgh, as quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will actually be taking the field, after missing the previous matchup. In four games since that turnover-laden game, the Steelers have fumbled the ball just four times since.
Browns can't stop Broncos
(12/23/12) The Browns DST surrendered 34 points on 457 yards of total offense in Week 16. The unit was gashed through the air as Peyton Manning threw for 339 yards and three touchdowns in the 34-12 defeat. Denver also racked up 118 yards on the ground and scored at least seven points in every quarter. Cleveland did not record a sack in the blowout loss and only forced one turnover, which was an interception just before halftime.
It's been a long time since the Browns DST was great for Fantasy Football but the new coaching staff is hoping to change things. The Browns hired Ray Horton to coordinate the defense after he and the Cardinals parted ways. The Browns will move to a 3-4 front and spent a lot of money in free agency to make the unit look good. Paul Kruger and first-round pick Barkevious Mingo will join Jabaal Sheard and Quentin Groves as pass rushers and the defensive line was fortified with the addition of end Desmond Bryant. The Browns will have big men up front, D'Qwell Jackson in the middle and a young secondary headlined by Joe Haden and T.J. Ward. With Horton calling the shots the team should improve on the 38 sacks and 17 interceptions they had last year while finishing 19th against the run and 25th against the pass. Save for some big moves we'd look for the Browns DST off waivers as a one-week replacement. (Updated 5/15/13)
