Bears welcome Tucker as DC
(1/19/13) Following a quick search, the Bears hired Jacksonville's Mel Tucker as their defensive coordinator to replace Rod Marinelli on Friday. Tucker spent the past four seasons as the Jaguars' defensive coordinator and was assistant head coach this season. He interviewed to replace Mike Mularkey, who was fired after going 2-14 in his lone season as head coach, but that job went to Seattle defensive coordinator Gus Bradley on Thursday. New Chicago coach Marc Trestman wanted to retain Marinelli, but he chose not to return. Now, he's turning to Tucker, who has experience with the 4-3 as well as the 3-4 defensive formations. The Jaguars also used Cover-2 defense last season, a staple in Chicago under the fired Lovie Smith.
Bears say goodbye to Lovie Smith
(12/31/12) Following a 10-win season that did not include a playoff berth, the Bears reportedly fired head coach Lovie Smith. Smith's defense was outstanding and the offense made strides, but a lack of playoff appearances coupled with late-season meltdowns sealed his fate. According to FOXSports.com, Chicago has already asked for permission to interview Denver offensive coordinator Mike McCoy.
Bears have solid day
(12/30/12) The Bears DST recovered three fumbles, while intercepting a Matthew Stafford pass and sacking the Lions quarterback once in Sunday's 26-24 win over Detroit. The Bears recorded a sack in all 16 games this season.
Bears back in business?
(12/27/12) For many other DSTs, a 17-point game would be a season highlight. But the Bears, who reached that total in Week 7 against the Lions (their Week 17 opponent), it was only the sixth-highest total of the year. The Bears have 228 Fantasy points so far this season, by far the most of any other DST.
The Bears continue to field one of the toughest defenses around, so much so that the unit has overshadowed the special-teams game that used to produce big numbers. Last year the defense was responsible for an NFL-record nine touchdowns with a special-teams score added on. The unit also picked up 41 sacks and 21 interceptions. The run defense ranked eighth (101.7 rush yards per game and six rush touchdowns allowed all season) and the pass defense pitched in, ranking eighth (213.9 yards per game). Now, can they do it again? The team made some changes at linebacker, passing on re-signing Brian Urlacher and Nick Roach and replacing them with veterans D.J. Williams and James Anderson as well as rookies Jon Bostic and Khaseem Greene. That's considered an upgrade. There are some questions about the shape of the secondary, particularly in terms of their age. On the plus side, the pass rush should remain aggressive and even though there's a new coaching staff in place, the core fundamentals of the defense aren't expected to change. Any bonus you can get from Devin Hester returning to full-time kick-return duties will help too. The Bears DST is worth one of your last four picks. (Updated 5/15/13)
