Kiffin brings change to Cowboys D: The Cowboys have hired veteran defensive coach Monte Kiffin to serve as their defensive coordinator, multiple outlets report Friday. The move signals a major change in philosophy for the Cowboys as Kiffin will serve as their fourth defensive coordinator in four years. Kiffin has made a career out of building defenses out of the "Tampa-2" scheme as part of a 4-3 front. The Cowboys have predominantly run a 3-4 defense for years. (Updated 1/11/13) |

| Fantasy Analysis |
In Kiffin's 13 seasons in Tampa Bay, his defense finished as a Top 10 unit 11 times. The system preaches certain skill players that the Cowboys might not have on the roster. For instance it could signal a change for DeMarcus Ware, making him a defensive end instead of a linebacker. Ultimately, Kiffin's scheme will wholly depend on who's in it rather than the scheme itself since the Tampa-2 style has been copied, passed around, and in some organizations discarded. This doesn't change anything involving the Cowboys DST as it remains a low-end option to draft this summer. (Updated 1/11/13). |
| The Cowboys DST was among the most disappointing units in 2012. The Cowboys DST was drafted as a starting option last year but finished No. 27 in Fantasy points. They managed just seven interceptions, which was tied for lowest in the NFL, with only 34 sacks, nine fumbles and four defensive touchdowns. Rob Ryan was fired as defensive coordinator, and Monte Kiffin was brought in. The unit will switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3 scheme and run Kiffin's famous “Tampa 2” defense, but anything should be better than last year. We don't consider the Cowboys DST worth drafting in most formats, but they are a unit to watch. If Kiffin can turn this defense around quickly they could be worth adding off the waiver wire.
