Preseason Outlook

Sweed to get shot at No. 3 job: The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians identified second-year WR Limas Sweed as a candidate to replace WR Nate Washington in the Steelers' receiving rotation. Between the regular season and postseason, Sweed had 84 yards receiving. "Limas has the ability to do it. He just has to continue to grow and be consistent," Arians said. "He's shown the ability to get behind people and that was the No. 1 thing Nate gave us, the ability to stretch coverage."

Fantasy Analysis

Sweed has immense size (6-foot-4) and good speed and should eventually evolve into a nice NFL receiver. He just needs to put it all together. He's probably not going to make a major dent in 2009 but could develop into a phenom by 2010, his third NFL season. As such, Sweed is a guy worth a look in dynasty/keeper leagues with a late-round pick. Owners in seasonal formats can get away with passing on him and hope to grab him off the waiver wire if he takes off.

2009 Fantasy outlooks: Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers are a great team and the defending Super Bowl champs, but when it comes to Fantasy, the best thing they have to offer is defense. Our Jamey Eisenberg evaluates Pittsburgh from a Fantasy perspective.

Limas Sweed had a disappointing rookie season in 2008. He was the No. 4 WR behind Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes and Nate Washington and only caught six passes for 64 yards. He also lost a fumble. Sweed did get an increased role during the postseason, but will be remembered more for his drops than any plays he made. This year, Sweed moves up to the No. 3 role with Washington now in Tennessee, although he will likely get competition from rookie Mike Wallace, who the Steelers drafted in the third round of the NFL Draft. Sweed is worth using as a late-round flier in deeper leagues, but his biggest impact will likely come toward the end of the season or in 2010, when he's in his third year. Keep in mind, Ben Roethlisberger tends to spread the ball around, but Sweed could develop into his big-play threat, much as Washington was before he left. (Updated 4/27/09)
