Fresh start for Bucs' Clayton: The big contract Michael Clayton signed three months ago isn't the only reason the sixth-year pro is excited to still be wearing the uniform of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. An underachiever who fell out of favor with former coach Jon Gruden, the wide receiver anticipates playing a significant role in a system being installed by incoming offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski. The former No. 1 draft pick flourished as a rookie, with 80 receptions for 1,193 yards and seven touchdowns - all records for a first-year player in Tampa Bay. His production declined sharply after 2004, though, and he has only scored two TDs since his first year. Injuries were a factor, but so was Gruden losing confidence in the 26-year-old, who dropped passes in key situations and struggled to keep his starting job. Clayton welcomes the chance for a fresh beginning under new coach Raheem Morris. "He hasn't lived up to your expectations," Morris said, shrugging off questions about the 6-foot-4, 215-pound receiver being a disappointment for much of his career. "The reason we signed him back is because he lived up to ours. If you go look at receivers pound for pound in the league and talk about blocking downfield and creating big plays, putting their face on people and being tough, that's Michael Clayton."

Fantasy Analysis

As of now, Clayton is expected to start opposite Antonio Bryant in the Bucs' offense. Though he had that great year as a rookie, he's done bupkis since. We think of him more as a third or fourth option in the Bucs' offense behind Bryant and tight end Kellen Winslow. Feel free to take him with a late-round pick in drafts this summer, but considering his track record, don't expect a whole lot.

2009 Fantasy outlooks: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Buccaneers saw plenty of turnover this offseason, including in their coaching staff. Our Dave Richard examines all of the new faces and how they might impact Fantasy leagues this season.

Michael Clayton spent his contract year with the Bucs posting 484 yards on 38 catches (12.7 avg.) with a touchdown. Would you believe those were the second-best stats he's had in his career? So how did the Bucs treat this perennial underachiever? With a $10 million signing bonus on a contract extension this offseason, that's how. Clayton has good size but hasn't been a true receiving threat since his rookie year (1,193 yards, seven TDs as a rookie; about 1,500 yards and two TDs in four years since). He's not worth the risk of a draft pick this summer -- if he plays well early in '09, grab him off the waiver wire. (Updated 3/18/09)
