Good times ahead for Eli Manning?
|by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer|
|(11/24/14) Because of one especially awful game Week 11 against San Francisco in which he threw five interceptions, Eli Manning's stock isn't as high as it should be in Fantasy right now, but remove it from the equation and you'll see his production has gone up a notch since rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham replaced an injured Victor Cruz in the starting lineup.
It was especially evident in Week 12 when, aided by Beckham's spectacular one-handed catch falling into the end zone, Manning threw for 338 yards and three touchdowns. But it was nothing new for him. He has averaged 307.0 yards with nine touchdown passes in four games with Cruz out of the picture -- again, removing Week 11 from the equation.
It's not so surprising, really, given the effort he has made to deliver Beckham the ball, targeting him an average of 11.0 times over the last four weeks. If you have faith in Beckham to continue to deliver -- and after that catch Sunday, how could you not? -- then to some extent, you should have faith in Manning as well.
His position is much deeper, of course, so you have to weigh the downside as well as the upside with him. But given his matchups over the next few weeks, including Week 13 at Jacksonville, Manning is at least usable in 12-team leagues to close out the season.
Giants QB Eli Manning tallies 338 yards, three TDs in Week 12
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(11/24/14) Giants quarterback Eli Manning completed 29 of his 40 pass attempts for 338 yards with three touchdowns and one interception in his team's 31-28 loss to the Cowboys in Week 12.
Manning hooked up with rookie Odell Beckham on a pair of touchdowns in the first half, including an outstanding one-handed, 43-yard catch that will certainly find its way on every Play of the Year list. The Giants took a 21-10 lead into halftime before the Cowboys scored two touchdowns in the third quarter. Manning was able to bring his team back by connecting with Adrien Robinson from one-yard out with just three minutes remaining, but the Giants defense was unable to stop the Cowboys from responding one more time.
Manning's one interception came on an overthrow to a wide-open receiver who looked like he had a clear lane to the end zone with an on-target throw. Even with that mistake, it was an excellent rebound performance after throwing five interceptions in his previous game. He's set to face off with the Jaguars in Week 13.
Giants QB Manning: I want to finish career here
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(11/19/14) Giants quarterback Eli Manning has claimed he wants to finish his career with that franchise.
"I don't want anything else but to be here, play here and win another championship here," Manning said Wednesday.
Manning, who has already led the team to two Super Bowl titles, is coming off a five-interception game against San Francisco. It marked the team's fifth consecutive loss and all but eliminated the Giants from playoff contention.
Coughlin upset Giants missed big-play opportunity in Week 11 loss
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(11/18/14) Giants coach Tom Coughlin has plenty to be upset about as New York heads into Week 12 amid a five-game losing streak. The Giants had plenty of chances to end their losing skid during a 16-10 loss Week 11 vs. San Francisco, but the team was hurt by quarterback Eli Manning's five interceptions.
Coughlin voiced his displeasure after the loss about the Giants' failed attempt to score a go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter on four plays from the 4-yard line. On Monday, however, Coughlin expressed disappointment with another failed play earlier in the game, which he believes would have resulted in a 76-yard touchdown reception by rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
On their second offensive drive, the Giants had a second-and-8 from the 24-yard line. Manning faked the handoff to running back Rashad Jennings and had two receivers -- Beckham and tight end Larry Donnell -- running downfield. Unfortunately, Manning locked in on Donnell, who was running a corner fade, and missed Beckham, who ran a deep post and appeared to have two San Francisco defenders beat. Manning threw an incomplete pass to Donnell and two plays later they punted the football.
"On the seventh play of the game -- we scored on the fifth -- we had another opportunity for a score there," Coughlin said Monday, per NJ.com. "We had Odell running open on that play."
Eli Manning tosses five interceptions in Week 11 loss vs. 49ers
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(11/16/14) Quarterback Eli Manning tied a career-high with five interceptions in the Giants' 16-10 loss Week 11 vs. San Francisco. He completed 22 of 45 passes for 280 yards and one touchdown.
Manning had a lot of struggles near or inside the red zone Sunday. His second interception came on a third-and-7 play from the 49ers' 17-yard line. His third interception was picked off at the 49ers' 25-yard line. His fourth interception was intercepted at the 49ers' 20-yard line.
His last interception was picked off at the 49ers' 2-yard line after the Giants failed to convert on four straight passes from San Francisco's 4-yard line late in the fourth quarter. The Giants were driving for a go-ahead score at the time.
Manning had all of two interceptions in his previous seven games and six in his first nine games. His only other five-interception game happened in Dec. 2013 against the Seahawks.
Manning's lone touchdown was a 19-yard completion to tight end Larry Donnell in the first quarter, which gave New York a 7-0 lead. Manning has thrown just one touchdown pass in two straight games.
The Giants are back in action Week 12 vs. Dallas.
|We hope that Eli Manning gets a fresh start this season with new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, and maybe the change in play-calling will help Manning like it did with Jay Cutler and Philip Rivers in 2013. Manning, who is coming off ankle surgery in April, was a disaster last year. He had 3,818 passing yards, 18 touchdowns and 27 interceptions on 58 percent completions, and he had just one game with more than 20 Fantasy points, which was Week 1. Manning loses Hakeem Nicks and Brandon Myers, but he gets a new rookie in first-round pick Odell Beckham, along with the hope young receivers like Rueben Randle and Jerrel Jernigan step up and play a bigger role -- as well as Victor Cruz having a rebound season. We expect Manning to get better this year – it would be hard to get worse – but he's just a No. 2 Fantasy quarterback coming into the season. He will only be drafted with a late-round pick if he's drafted at all, and Manning is better suited as a bye-week or injury replacement. If he starts off the season playing at a high level then add him off waivers, but make sure Manning proves himself first.
