Big Ben blames injuries for bad 2012: In another interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said he wasn't comfortable with how his arm held up following shoulder and rib injuries last season. Though he had 20-plus Fantasy points in three of his final four regular-season games, the Steelers went 1-3 and missed out on the playoffs. "Sometimes, certain passes just weren't right. I didn't trust myself to get enough zip on it to throw it out there. I tried to guide it too much instead of just throw it. But that's making excuses," he said. "I'll be better, health-wise. ... I'm working out earlier this year. I took one week off, one week. I have no issues." (Updated 3/6/13) |

The bigger issue for Roethlisberger is the state of his receiving corps following the expected loss of receiver Mike Wallace this offseason. Without a dynamic field stretcher or a proven commodity in the backfield the Steelers could have a hard time keeping defenses off balance. Despite finishing as the 16th best quarterback in Fantasy last season Roethlisberger averaged just over 20 Fantasy points per game and had 19-plus Fantasy points in eight of 13 games. He's a tremendous bargain as a mid- to late-round pick as a potential Fantasy backup, especially if the Steelers do a good job replacing Wallace. (Updated 3/6/13). |
| Faced with starting the season without the same type of receiving firepower he had last year, Ben Roethlisberger has the look of a backup Fantasy quarterback. The Steelers gave up on speedster Mike Wallace (who accounted for eight of the team's receiving touchdowns last year) and are probably going to begin the year without tight end Heath Miller, who tore his ACL late last season (he accounted for another eight scores). His run game is no better, leaving Roethlisberger to shoulder the offensive workload without a number of threats like he's had in the past. This isn't to say Roethlisberger can't be a Fantasy dynamo but the reality is that he'll be hard pressed to produce the 20.5 Fantasy point average he had last year. Any improvements the Steelers make around him will go a long way but the team's salary cap is stretched thin and another season without a playoff appearance could be ahead. Be careful choosing Roethlisberger as anything more than a fairly good No. 2 Fantasy quarterback with a mid- to late-round pick. (Updated 4/26/13) |
