Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett neck-and-neck in Texans QB derby
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(6/16/15) The notion that one of the candidates for the starting quarterback job with the Texans would play himself out of the running this early has turned out to be a little far-fetched.
Both Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett have impressed Bill O'Brien, who is now hedging on his earlier claim that he might name a starter soon. He might be forced to wait beyond the beginning of training camp.
"These two guys are competing really well; they're very bright guys," O'Brien told the team website. "I think they've both had really good springs. ... [The starter] might be named next week. He might be named after the Redskins three days of practice. It might be after the San Francisco preseason game."
Without pads or contact drills, the evaluation process at quarterback is more difficult. O'Brien must rely on other qualities, such as grasping concepts at meetings, practice performance, leadership qualities, picking up the offense and decision-making. So far, it appears to be a dead-heat.
"I don't think there's a situation here where one guy has just been that much better on any given day than the other guy," O'Brien said. "They both practice very well. These guys command at the line of scrimmage. Both these guys know how to run an offensive huddle in pro football. They're leaders, so I think it's helped our team."
Texans may decide starting quarterback before training camp

|(6/11/15) With Texans quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett competing for the starting role, coach Bill O'Brien said Thursday he may decide on his starting quarterback before training camp begins, reports NFL.com.
"That decision may be made before training camp," O'Brien said. "They're out here competing [in OTAs and at mandatory minicamp] every single day, and it's pretty intense. So, we may pick a guy very soon. And if we don't, and the decision does go into training camp, it'll be made pretty early on. The team needs to know who the guy is, and we need to go forward."
Tempo will determine Ryan Mallett, Brian Hoyer QB battle for Texans
|by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com|
|(6/1/15) The Texans quarterback battle will come down to more than who puts up better numbers in the preseason. Coach Bill O'Brien is looking at the big picture when it comes to Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer.
"I really think it’s important for these guys to be able to operate the offense at a high tempo,” O’Brien said, per HoustonTexans.com. “We have a lot of different types of tempo, but to be in and out of the huddle or when it’s no huddle, changing the pace of practice and handling that on their own. Being able to communicate the play, get people lined up, change the cadence, get us into the right play and then complete the pass."
Texans in no hurry to name starting QB
|by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer|
|(6/1/15) Texans coach Bill O'Brien said Monday there was "no timetable" for the team to name a starting quarterback, as Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer battle for the No. 1 spot, per the Houston Chronicle.
The pair have been splitting first-team reps during OTAs and neither has emerged enough for O'Brien to make a definitive call. Mallett threw for 400 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions before suffering a torn pectoral muscle, while Hoyer started strong last season with the Browns but faded, finishing with 3,326 yards, 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
Texans' Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett splitting first-team reps

|(5/28/15) As expected, Texans quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett split reps with the first-team during Wednesday's OTA practice, according to the Houston Chronicle.
Hoyer is no stranger to competing for a starting job after going through the process in Cleveland against Johnny Manziel a year ago.
“I’ve been through it before,” Hoyer said. “I’m not going to let it affect me and I’ll just be myself and really focus on the things that I can control.”
Hoyer, behind an offensive line that struggled following Alex Mack's season-ending injury, finished 2014 with 3,326 yards, 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Mallett, who suffered a season-ending torn pectoral, appeared in three games for Houston and threw for 400 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
|Brian Hoyer will compete for the Texans starting quarterback job with Ryan Mallett in training camp this summer. Hoyer was in a similar competition last year and won the Browns job and even led them to a 7-4 record before collapsing. This doesn't mean he'll put up huge numbers, of course. With four 300-yard games and four multiple-touchdown games over his 32-game career, Hoyer's a safe bet to be on the waiver wire for much of the season. Don't plan on drafting him.
