Browns to name starting QB before third preseason game
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/22/14) Browns coach Mike Pettine said he'll name a starting quarterback -- either Brian Hoyer or Johnny Manziel -- before the third preseason game Aug. 23 against the Rams, reports the Akron Beacon Journal

"It could be sooner, and that’s something we’re going to discuss," Pettine said. "It’ll be before the third preseason game. I just don’t have a date. I don’t know if I’ll set a date and kind of paint ourselves into a date, but it will be sooner than the third preseason game."

Brian Hoyer cleared for 11-on-11 work
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7/18/14) Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer (knee) has been cleared for 11-on-11s when training camp begins July 26, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

"It's exciting for me," Hoyer said. "It's something I've worked really hard to get back to and I'm just looking forward to getting going once everybody gets there next Friday and then obviously the first practice is next Saturday, so it's an exciting time for us."

Hoyer, who will start out No. 1 on the depth chart ahead of Johnny Manziel, hopes he'll be full-go for all 13 practices of camp.

"It hasn't been discussed yet," he said. "All I know is that when I left and I was begging them to let me practice, they said once training camp comes there won't be any limitations, so we'll see how it goes and take it day-by-day. Obviously we're going to see how the knee's feeling, but I'm geared up and ready to go and excited. I can't wait for next Saturday."

Hoyer, who suffered the torn ACL against the Bills Oct. 3, acknowledged it's rewarding to finally get the green light. The medical staff limited him in 11-on-11s during minicamp and organized team activities.

"It feels good to know that I put the work in and now it's time to go," he said. "You don't think about it. You just go out and play football."

Brian Hoyer: 'No doubt' I'm 100 percent
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/14/14) Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer told CBS Cleveland there's "no doubt" he's 100 percent healthy and that he'll participate fully in all of training camp. Hoyer is coming back from a torn ACL that ended his 2013 season after three games.

Hoyer sat out some team drills during OTAs as coaches managed his knee, but he's not expected to be limited during camp. "Yeah, no doubt. No doubt," Hoyer said. "I’m ready to go so can’t wait for Day 1."

Report: Browns trying to extend QB Hoyer
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/30/14) The Browns are trying to give quarterback Brian Hoyer a contract extension, sources tell ESPN. But according to Hoyer's agent, the negotiations will be difficult.

Agent Joe Linta told NFL Network that "it will be a very difficult deal to do" because Hoyer is content to "wait and see what happens down the road."

Hoyer is entering a contract year as well as a well-publicized camp battle with Johnny Manziel.

Kruger likes Brian Hoyer over Johnny Manziel
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/17/14) If Browns linebacker Paul Kruger was making the decision on the starting quarterback for 2014, he would go with Brian Hoyer over rookie Johnny Manziel, reports NFL.com.

"In my mind, Hoyer's the guy," Kruger said during a radio interview on KFAN-AM in Utah. "Hoyer came in, won us four games, unfortunately got hurt. The guy was on fire when he was healthy and he's proven himself at a different level and has worked extremely hard."

Hoyer actually started three games before an ACL injury ended his 2013 season. As it stands coming into training camp, coach Mike Pettine said Hoyer is "securely ahead" of Manziel. But Pettine also added Hoyer's lead wasn't "insurmountable."

"You let the preseason go, see how they look and then make a decision," Kruger said. "In my mind, Hoyer has been a good leader for us and somebody who has been able to win us a few games. It's tough to say but I think the preseason will be a big deal for both of them."
