Flacco agrees to new deal: FOX Sports reports Friday that the Ravens have come to an agreement with quarterback Joe Flacco on a new contract. According to the report, Flacco has agreed to a six-year deal worth $120.6 million, which will make him the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history. He finished his fifth season in the league with a career-high 3,817 yards, while completing 59.7 percent of his 531 pass attempts. He scored 22 touchdowns, giving him four consecutive seasons with at least 20 scores. Flacco is officially expected to sign his new deal Monday.

In less than a month after winning a Super Bowl, Flacco, who will average $20.1 million per year, is now the highest paid quarterback in the league. At this point, it is uncertain how much is actually guaranteed in the deal, but it appears as if his deal is slightly higher than the deal Drew Brees received last year in the offseason. Flacco had a decent season but was even better in the playoffs. He fired 11 touchdown passes and no interceptions in four postseason games, including the Super Bowl where he connected on 22 of his 33 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns against the 49ers. Fantasy owners should view him as a high-end reserve option, worth drafting with a late-round pick on Draft Day.

| Joe Flacco certainly isn't boring anymore. On his way to winning a Super Bowl, Flacco posted two or more touchdowns and posting 20-plus Fantasy points in seven of his last eight games, including the postseason. The only non two-TD game came in a meaningless Week 17 matchup. These games were coordinated by Jim Caldwell, who replaced Cam Cameron and gave Flacco more freedom to run a hurry-up offense and attack downfield. The results were amazing, and some believe it's just the beginning of Flacco turning over a new leaf. He certainly found some green, becoming the NFL's highest-paid player this offseason, but he also lost reliable hands man Anquan Boldin, a key player in the Ravens' Super Bowl march. Despite all this, there's still a stigma that Flacco doesn't have enough weapons around him to keep this up and be a reliable Fantasy passer. Playing at a position ripe with reliable, explosive talent also hurts his cause. Flacco is best viewed as a No. 2 Fantasy quarterback with potential to play like a No. 1 option. You should be able to find him in Round 9 or later as a great option to pair with one of the young hot-shot quarterbacks that broke out last year. (Updated 4/26/13) |
