Lions committed to Stafford
(2/19/13) According to mlive.com, Lions president Tom Lewand said it is important to rework quarterback Matthew Stafford's current contract. Stafford has two more years remaining on his contract, and will earn a base salary of $12 million in 2013, but his salary cap hit is $20.3 million. He will earn $11 million in 2014 ($19.3 million salary cap number) and $15 million in 2015 ($17.7 million salary cap number). Despite the obvious need to free up cap space, Lewand said reworking Stafford's deal is essential because he wants the quarterback to remain in Detroit long-term. "Matthew Stafford is our quarterback, and we hope is our quarterback for a long time," Lewand said. "The reason to explore a contract extension with Matthew is to fulfill that goal of having him be our quarterback for a long time. It's not a short-term look at the salary cap. That's the wrong way to look at that. When you look at extending somebody like Matthew, he's not going to take less money to extend. That's a very short-term focus to look at. The reason to have an extension with Matthew, just like the reason to have the extension with Calvin last year, was to secure their services for a long period of time. In Calvin's case last year, the timing was a little bit different because we knew that there was an opportunity to get something done. But in Matthew's case, Matthew's got two years left on his deal. Calvin didn't. It's a different set of circumstances."
Stafford could get new deal
(1/17/13) The Detroit Free Press reports that Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford could get a new contract this offseason. General manager Martin Mayhew said he hopes to work out a new deal with Stafford before the start of free agency in March. Stafford's cap figure for next year is $20.3 million.
Stafford sets record in loss
(12/30/12) Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford had 42 pass attempts against the Bears on Sunday, giving him an NFL record 727 attempts on the season. The previous high was 691, set by Drew Bledsoe in 1994. Stafford had 272 passing yards and three touchdowns, while fumbling twice and throwing an interception. He finishes the year with 20 passing touchdowns -- a huge drop-off from the 41 he passed for in 2011 -- and 17 interceptions.
Stafford looks to set record
(12/27/12) How heavily stilted is the Detroit offense toward the pass? With his seventh attempt on Sunday against the Bears, Matthew Stafford will set the single-season pass attempt record. The previous record-holder, Drew Bledsoe, threw 691 times in 1994; so far this season, Stafford has attempted 685 passes. So why isn't Stafford being praised for his Fantasy prowess? Because he's managed just 17 touchdowns on the season, alongside 16 interceptions, from those 685 attempts -- a far cry from last year, when Stafford threw 41 touchdown passes.
Stafford goes off vs. Falcons
(12/23/12) Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford became the all-time franchise leader in career completions with 1,090 during Saturday's contest against the Falcons at home in Week 16. Stafford turned in a quality performance as he reached the 400-yard mark for the second time this season. He completed 37 of 56 passes for season-high 443 yards with an interception and no touchdowns in a 31-18 defeat. He was picked off by Asante Samuel in the fourth quarter and finished with 82.7 quarterback rating. He set a record for most yards in a game without throwing a touchdown pass.
