Schaub gets fresh WR in Hopkins

(4/26/13) The Houston Texans selected Clemson receiver DeAndre Hopkins with the 27th overall pick in the NFL draft, a player who should instantly prop up Matt Schaub's stats. Last year Texans receivers not named Andre Johnson totaled 63 catches for 841 yards (13.3 avg.) and four touchdowns. In three seasons with Clemson the 6-foot-1, 214-pound Hopkins caught 206 passes for 3,020 yards (14.6 avg.) and 27 touchdowns including 18 in 13 games last season.

McNair defends Schaub

(2/7/13) Following a season-ending, 41-28 defeat to the Patriots in the AFC Divisional Playoffs, Texans quarterback Matt Schaub received the brunt of criticism for his team's late-season demise. The Texans opened the season with an 11-1 record and emerged as contenders to represent the conference in the Super Bowl. But Schaub struggled with his accuracy over the final two months, as the Texans averaged less than 20 points per game during a 2-4 stretch to end the season. On Wednesday, the two-time Pro Bowl quarterback received a vote of confidence from Texans owner Bob McNair. When asked about the criticism levied toward Schaub, McNair said via the team's official website, “I don't think it's justified. We have 53 people on the team and everybody needs to step it up.”

Schaub 'fell apart' in 2012

(1/29/13) The Houston Chronicle reports "it is going to be a difficult offseason" for Texans quarterback Matt Schaub after "he fell apart" in 2012. Despite completing 64.3 percent of his passes and throwing for 4,008 yards with 22 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, Schaub is viewed as having a down year, especially toward the end. He closed the year with just four touchdowns and four interceptions in his final six regular season games, and in two playoff games against Cincinnati and New England, he had two touchdowns and two interceptions. He then struggled in the Pro Bowl when he completed only 12 of 22 passes for only 113 yards with two interceptions in a game in which defense isn’t allowed.

Schaub remains confident

(1/24/13) The Houston Chronicle reports that Texans quarterback Matt Schaub said he needs to play better in 2013. “I’m aware of it,” Schaub said. “I understand. As players, as a quarterback, you’re the first one to get criticized when you don’t get things done. You get a lot of praise — sometimes more than you deserve — when you win. As you get closer to the end of the thing, things are magnified even more so. It’s the nature of the business; I understand that. I can get better, the team can get better, and we’re going to focus on those things, and we’re going to get right back there.” Schaub really struggled at the end of the regular season. “I think results changed,” Schaub said, when asked if he thought his play changed late in the season. “I don’t know about the way I played. We played good football teams, teams that were fighting for their lives and playoff spots. You want to play at a certain level all the time. It’s hard to play that perfect game.”

Kubiak: Schaub's still our guy

(1/14/13) Texans coach Gary Kubiak made it clear Monday quarterback Matt Schaub wasn't going anywhere. Schaub didn't help the Texans with an interception in their playoff loss at New England but did finish with good numbers (34 of 51 passing for 343 yards and two scores with the INT). However it was his first two-TD game in his last six and just the seventh over 18 games. Nonetheless, Kubiak is sticking with him. "I believe in Matt. He's the quarterback of our football team. I've got no doubt about him. The team has to get better for us to take the next step," the coach said according to the Houston Chronicle.
