Bills release QB Fitzpatrick
by Dave Richard \| Senior Fantasy Writer (3/12/13) On the same day Bills general manager Buddy Nix said on a phone conversation he didn't know was being recorded that Ryan Fitzpatrick was effectively a backup quarterback in a starting job, the team released him. "We kept every possible option open right down to the wire when we had to make a decision on whether to keep Ryan," Nix said in an official team press release. "In the end, we had to do what we feel is best for our football team and it was a very difficult decision. Ryan did some great things as our starting quarterback. ... Our focus remains on adding another quarterback to our roster and we will continue to explore every option available to us."

Ex-coach: Fitz 'average to below-average'
by Dave Richard \| Senior Fantasy Writer (2/21/13) Former Bills tight ends coach Pete Metzelaars told the Buffalo News that quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was part of the problem with the team's bad record in 2012. "If you have a dominating defense, you can get by with an average to below-average quarterback. If you don't have a dominating defense, you need a winning quarterback in the NFL," Metzelaars said. "Fitz is an average to below-average kind of guy, and unfortunately he made some bad decisions at the end of games and then didn't make plays at the ends of other games we had chances to win. So it’s got to start there."

Fitzpatrick's job in jeopardy
by Jamey Eisenberg \| Senior Fantasy Writer (1/25/13) The Buffalo News reports Bills offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett was non-committal Thursday when asked about quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick being the starter in 2013. “I think right now I have to continue to evaluate," Hackett said. "I have to see what everything is across the board. Watching him, watching all the other quarterbacks out there, watching all the draft guys, that’s really what I’m doing right now. I’m trying to look and get the best evaluation on everybody.”

Johnson wants Fitzpatrick challenged
by Jamey Eisenberg \| Senior Fantasy Writer (1/22/13) The Buffalo News reports that Bills receiver Stevie Johnson wants to see a new quarterback brought in to challenge Ryan Fitzpatrick for the starting job. Johnson claimed he still has faith in Fitzpatrick as the Bills' quarterback moving forward but wants to see him pushed. "Because competition brings out the best in us," Johnson said. "If we went out and got another quarterback, who knows what'll happen? Fitz may still win, or the other guy my win. Let it happen like that. I'm a guy that's about competing. Bring whoever you want in and the better man will win. So be it." Fitzpatrick ranked 18th in passer rating this season. He completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 3,400 yards and 24 touchdowns with 16 interceptions.
