Brandon LaFell not the only Patriots WR to consider

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/29/14) It's time to give Patriots wide receiver Brandon LaFell a shot in Fantasy -- as in not just owning him, but starting him. If his 11 catches for 124 yards and a touchdown Week 8 against the Bears weren't enough to convince you, his matchup Week 9 against Denver should be.

It's not that the Broncos are so bad against the pass. They rank in the middle of the pack, allowing 242.9 yards per game. It's just that the Patriots' only hope against them is to beat Peyton Manning at his own game. Their passing attack -- at least the version they've shown in the last four weeks -- is good enough to beat anybody when they're motivated to use it.

LaFell appears to have leapfrogged Julian Edelman in the pecking order, but frankly, Edelman might not be such a bad play either. Tom Brady is going to need every weapon at his disposal to outscore Manning and company. Edelman is more of a desperation play than LaFell, I think, advisable only if you're short on startable wide receivers, but Dave Richard likes him enough with this matchup to rank him 24th at the position.

Brandon LaFell pushing Julian Edelman out?

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/26/14) Tom Brady had a new favorite target Week 8 against Chicago, and I don't mean tight end Rob Gronkowski. He may have led the Patriots with 149 yards and three touchdowns, but wide receiver Brandon LaFell actually had more targets and catches, finishing with 11 of both for 124 yards and a touchdown of his own.

So where was Julian Edelman in all of this? He was suddenly an afterthought in the passing game, making just one grab for 14 yards. The poor production has been going on for a while now, but he also had just four targets in this one, nearly half his previous low of seven.

We may have witnessed a changing of the guard here. Though LaFell consistently trailed Edelman in targets the previous four weeks, he averaged 72.8 yards during that stretch to Edelman's 48.3. True, because of his role, Edelman will never average many yards per catch, but now that Brady has some trust in LaFell, he may not have much incentive to target Edelman, who has also struggled with drops recently. His comparatively small gains are even harder to justify when they're not cinch completions.

With this performance, I'd consider LaFell a must-add. He has a growing role in an explosive offense. And though it would have seemed like blasphemy just a few weeks ago, I don't know that Edelman is beyond dropping in standard (as in non-PPR) leagues.

Patriots WR Brandon LaFell can't be stopped Week 8

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10/26/14) Patriots wideout Brandon LaFell could not be stopped Week 8 against the Bears.

LaFell hauled in all of his 11 targets, gaining 124 yards and a score. While LaFell didn't have any huge gains, he was a consistent mid-range threat for Tom Brady. After a big punt return, LaFell was able to score on a 9 yard catch from Tom Brady. With the game wrapped up early, LaFell sat on the team's final drive.

LaFell will look for more Week 9 against the Broncos.

Prioritizing waiver-wire picks at wide receiver

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(10/21/14) In his Week 8 waiver-wire column, Jamey Eisenberg takes a look at the wide receivers most worth adding ahead of this week's games.

The list is headlined by new Seahawks' No. 1 Doug Baldwin (33 percent owned), with Odell Beckham (68 percent) of the Giants, Davante Adams (21 percent) of the Packers, Allen Robinson (34 percent) of the Jaguars and Brandon LaFell (56 percent) of the Patriots rounding out the remainder of the top five.

If you need to drop someone to make room for any pickups this week, he also recommends possibly parting ways with the Vikings' Cordarrelle Patterson (81 percent) or the Steelers' Markus Wheaton (35 percent).

Patriots' backup pass-catchers contribute Thursday

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10/17/14) The Patriots received contributions from a number of players Week 7 against the Jets.

Brandon LaFell led the way, hauling in four passes for 55 yards. He finished third on the team in yardage, and was targeted five times. Danny Amendola caught one pass, but made it count. In the fourth quarter, Amendola scored on a 19 yard reception from Tom Brady. Amendola should have had a better game, but had a couple catches taken away due to penalties. Brandon Bolden also caught one ball for 4 yards.

They'll look for more Week 8 against the Bears.
