Dolphins: Newcomer Ndamukong Suh must earn the big bucks

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5/21/15) The Dolphins made Ndamukong Suh the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history when they signed him to a six-year, $114 million contract with $60 million guaranteed.

Now they want him to earn it. And he has been made aware of that.

"I challenged Ndamukong," said vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum on 640 AM. "I talked to him. We have a lot of young players not only on the defensive line but on our team. If we were sitting here in 10 years and Jordan Phillips is talking about hopefully the career he is having, I'd love for him to say that in his formative years Ndamukong Suh impacted him.

"A lot of resources are going to Ndamukong. We're not hiding that. In a cap system players who take up a big part of your cap have to do more than just play well."

Suh has already raised a few eyebrows by his absence. He showed up for the first day of voluntary workouts but has been away from the team since, claiming he has opted to work with his personal trainer. But fellow Dolphins lineman A.J. Francis isn't complaining.

"He's the best d-lineman in the league so if we wants to train somewhere else that's his prerogative," Francis said. "And nobody can tell him otherwise."

Dolphins cleared of tampering charges in signing Ndamukong Suh

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5/12/15)
The Dolphins have been cleared of tampering violations in their signing of free agent defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, according to the Miami Herald.

Miami was accused of the violation when it was reported that Suh would sign with the team two days before teams were allowed to offer contracts to players. The NFL ruled the Dolphins didn't violate any of the rules after going through their phone records, which is required by the league.

Suh was signed to a six-year, $114 million this offseason by Miami. He totaled 53 tackles with 8 1/2 sacks in 16 games for the Lions in 2014.

DT Ndamukong Suh makes good first impression with Dolphins

by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(4/20/15) Ndamukong Suh, who rarely participated in offseason workouts while a member of the Lions, was present Monday for the first day of the Dolphins' workout sessions, per the Miami Herald.

The defensive tackle signed a six-year $114 million contract with $60 million guaranteed, and the Dolphins have to be happy they are getting an early return on their investment.

Report: Lions don't plan to file tampering charges regarding Suh

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/25/15) The Lions have no plans to pursue tampering charges against the Dolphins over defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh, a source told the Detroit Free Press

Suh agreed to terms on a six-year, $114-million deal with the Dolphins about 24 hours into the free-agent negotiating period. The parameters of the deal were leaked to the media days before the official start of free agency on March 10, according to The Palm Beach Post. Even though the Lions don't plan to pursue this matter, the NFL still has the right to initiate their own investigation.

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said Tuesday the league has not contacted him about a tampering investigation. NFL spokesperson Michael Signora declined comment.

"That's a league issue, you have to ask them," Lions president Tom Lewand said. "That's a league policy, that's a league issue. That's a league matter for them to decide."

Lions' Mayhew says Ndamukong Suh's departure could be benefit

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(3/23/15) While the Lions may not see the benefit of having Ndamukong Suh on the 2015 roster, general manager Martin Mayhew said the team may benefit in the future, reports the Detroit Free Press.

Suh signed a $114 million contract with the Dolphins, which Mayhew said was out of their price range.

"I think anytime you lose a quality player like that, especially in the short term, that is to your detriment," Mayhew said. "I think in the long term, I think we're going to be glad we don't have that contract on our books. But in the short term, that's an issue."

If Lions did re-sign Suh, Mayhew said the team would've had a hard time signing other quality players.

"There's a lot of different ways to give somebody $100 million, so a lot of times the structure comes into play, too, and all those things matter," Mayhew said. "But I know we have some quality players on our team that we probably couldn't keep if we had that deal on our books."
