Bears' Bennett: Trestman will be 'excellent coordinator' for Ravens
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(1/30/15) Marc Trestman lasted only two seasons as the Bears coach before losing his job. Bears tight end Martellus Bennett said on NFL Network on Friday that Trestman's demise in Chicago was plagued by his inability to control a locker room full of personalities.
"Trestman, I think, first off, the issue that he had, probably, was managing us all, all the different personalities," Bennett said. "There's a lot of big personalities (in the locker room). And I think, for a first-time head coach in the NFL, dealing with all the personalities that you have, I think that's hard when you got guys like me, you know, (Brandon) Marshall ... Lance Briggs on defense, (Charles) Tillman.
"There's so many guys with such outgoing personalities that managing those guys and bringing them all together is what a leader needs to do, you know? And that's one of the toughest things."
Although Trestman was fired in late December, he wasn't out of work for long, landing the job as the Ravens offensive coordinator after Gary Kubiak left to become the Broncos coach. Bennett believes Trestman will have success in his new role.
"Calling plays, he was excellent," Bennett said. "I think he's going to be an excellent coordinator for the Ravens. Strategically, he was great. But on the field, guys just weren't executing.
"A lot of it comes back to the player preparation. If you're not preparing to a high level, then the coaches can only do so much; the game's not played on paper, it's played on grass. On paper, we look great. On grass, we looked bad."
Bears' Bennett replaces Super Bowl-bound Gronk in Pro Bowl
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(1/19/15) Bears tight end Martellus Bennett was added to the Pro Bowl roster Monday, taking the place of tight end Rob Gronkowski, who will be unable to participate as the Patriots are preparing for the Super Bowl.
Bennett had the best season of his career in 2014. He totaled 90 catches for 916 yards and five touchdowns -- all career highs -- in 16 games.
Bears TE Bennett does heavy lifting; WR Jeffery held in check
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(12/28/14) Bears tight end Martellus Bennett did most of the heavy lifting in the aerial attack, while wide receiver Alshon Jeffery was held in check in Sunday's season finale against Minnesota.
Bennett led the way with eight catches for 59 yards on 11 targets. He finishes the season with 90 catches for 916 yards and six scores. Jeffery caught only two of five passes thrown in his direction for 34 yards in a 13-9 defeat. He turned 145 targets into 85 catches for 1,133 yards and a career-best 10 touchdowns.
Bears TE Bennett gains nothing in Sunday defeat
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(12/21/14) Bears tight end Martellus Bennett had not been blanked in terms of yardage since Dec. 4, 2011. That is, until Sunday.
Bennett was targeted just three times and caught only one pass for no yards in the defeat to Detroit.
He still needs 143 yards in Week 17 at Minnesota to hit 1,000 for the season.
Martellus Bennett slows down a bit in loss
|by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com|
|(12/16/14) Bears tight end Martellus Bennett came tumbling back down to Earth in Week 15, as the Saints held him to just three catches in a loss.
Bennett, who had 193 yards on 20 catches with a touchdown in his previous two games, was a victim of Jay Cutler's struggles Monday. He had just four catches for 36 yards, and was targeted only six times, his lowest total in four games, though he did haul in a two-point conversion to add some extra value.
Bennett came out of the gates red hot this season, scoring four touchdowns in the first three games, but has just two in 11 games since. Still, he is the team's No. 2 receiver at this point, now that Brandon Marshall is down. He's got solid enough matchup in Week 16, against a Bears team he had 109 yards against three weeks ago, so keep him active in all Fantasy formats even after his disappointing showing Monday.
|Martellus Bennett has made the transition to solid Fantasy tight end thanks to consecutive Top 12 finishes at the position. He remains as a primary weapon in the Bears offense, one who tallied five scores and a career-high 759 yards in 2013. If you do draft him as your top tight end with a middle- to late-round pick, keep this factoid in the back of your head: Over the last two years Bennett has posted five games with 10-plus Fantasy points in September games and two 10-plus-point games total in the remaining months. A smart game plan would be to draft Bennett and if he follows form, deal him before his stats go the way of the dinosaur.
